10-Second Tour: Make Smith Leather Co. By: Grace Bonney

There’s something about leatherworking that has always been intriguing to me. I’ll never forget the first time I visited Matt Pierce’s studio in Portland, OR. The the smell of the shop, the beautiful tools and the feeling of being part of such a long and unique tradition was wonderful. That tradition is being carried out across the globe by a new generation of artists and I’m so thrilled to share a peek inside one of their studios today, courtesy of one of our favorite photographers, Leela Cyd.

Leela got a chance to visit the family-owned and operated studio of Make Smith Leather Co. in Santa Barbara, CA last week and I wish I could have tagged along in her camera bag for the visit. Designer and craftsman Steven Soria grew up in a family of artists and makers and what began at first as his custom workshop grew into a much bigger business that now includes private label manufacturing, an in-house product line and custom work for clients across the country. We’ve been lucky enough to work with Steven before (on some awesome DIY leather drawer pulls and a fun home tour), so it was a real treat to get to peek inside his studio. I love the custom belt bar and all the hanging plants – it’s the sort of place I could see myself stopping by for special gifts now and then and just to pop in and see what they’re working on. Thanks so much to everyone at Make Smith for welcoming us into their studio and to Leela for sharing these wonderful pictures with us! xo, grace
