Hemnes Dog Gate By: Kara

IMG_8469sm IMG_8467sm

If you fail at teaching your dogs good door manners, at least know how to built a good gate! I got a hold of the headboard and footboard pieces from a Hemnes daybed from the “as is” section of Ikea. I put them to great use with this dog gate. The span of my entryway is 7.5′ so any decent store bought gate that would fit the space cost a small fortune.

Two 4×4 posts are screwed into the floor with L-brackets at the bottom and a single L-bracket screwed into the wall at the top. The 2×4 post in the center is also screwed into the floor. It’s sturdy and beautiful. The the best part is, no more squeezing my body half way out the door, balancing on one foot and using the other foot to keep the dogs back while trying to pay the pizza guy! Woot!

Kitchen Cabinet Upgrade Hack By: James Diaz

20131211_092724

Problem: Extend and add to current non-Ikea kitchen cabinets on a budget.

Solution: Ikea AKURUM modifications

20131211_095436 20131211_095426

Finding that the AKURUM line of products was almost exactly the correct depth to match my current cabinet box while still adding oak face trim, it seemed a real no-brainer. To match the width of my current 2.25″ oak face trim, I simple added a 3/4″ outer oak veneer panel with 3/4″ pine board spacer between. To match my existing kickplate, I built a quick shadowbox to both lift the hack into the proper position and provide the proper kickplate surface. Fine tuning was done by wood shims and cardboard spacers.

I also added a similar pantry mod for the 24″x 80″ AKURUM and one a connected 12″ AKURUM base.

Godmoron sink cabinet to storage trunk By: Kara

IMG_8297sm

Godmorgon sink cabinet turned bedroom storage trunk:

1) The bottom drawer was assembled and installed according to the Ikea instructions.

2) The top drawer was not assembled. The drawer front is held on by L-brackets. It is also screwed in through the front cross beam (don’t skip screwing the drawer in along the entire length of the front cross beam… this provides stability and stops it from swaying side to side when sat upon)

3) I screwed cleats into the side walls of the trunk and then screwed slats to them to create a bottom for the hinged portion of the trunk. The slats came from an Ikea bed (a Malm single, I do believe).

4) I cut a piece of plywood slightly larger than the top, added foam, and upholstered it.

5) The top is held on by a piano hinge and a chest lid stay/hinge was installed.

6) I added foam pads to the bottom of the trunk so that it will not scratch the floor when moved, but also to lift it up off the floor enough for the bottom drawer to slide open and closed.

The trunk is a bit taller than your standard trunk would be and I’m a bit shorter than your standard girl would be. If I get up on my tip toes before sitting, I can get my butt up on the seat though. No other adult in my house has this issue, just us shorties. We use the top part of the trunk to store our decorative pillows at night and the drawer to store extra blankets and sheets. I’m very happy with how it turned out!

Now You See It, Now You Don’t…Hiding Christmas Gifts From Jackie

Today's Inspiration comes from guest blogger Jackie Be sure to check out their blog!

This is the first year I have been concerned about the boys finding their "Santa gifts". They are both old enough now, and together mischevious enough, to start snooping around the house. I used to stash everything, usually unwrapped, in a closet. But this year I need to step up my gift hiding game.

Two levels kitchen island with Varde cabinet By: Sy

P1050939

We recently moved into a big house (compared to our previous small apartment) and I wanted to make the most of my old Varde cabinet (the one with 2 drawers and 2 doors).

We needed something for our quick meals and a kid friendly eating zone.

We bought a countertop at our regular hardware store, had it cut in two in order to create an angle around one of the Varde leg (tricky part ! my husband made a sketch for the store, and had to plane it down some more). We then fixed some legs to it and finally attached it to the wooden legs of the cabinet.

We are very happy with the result, and it’s easy to use on a daily basis with the kids.
