Big changes coming to IKEAHackers By: Jules IKEAHacker

jules sad

I am afraid I have a bit of bad news.

Some months ago I received a Cease and Desist (C&D) letter from the agent of Inter IKEA Systems B.V., citing that my site IKEAhackers.net has infringed upon its intellectual property rights. In that letter they asked that I agree to voluntarily transfer the domain name IKEAhackers.net to them, failing which they reserve the right to take any legal action it deems necessary against me.

Long story short, after much negotiation between their agent and my lawyer, I am allowed to keep the domain name IKEAhackers.net only on the condition that it is non-commercial, meaning no advertising whatsoever.

I agreed to that demand. Because the name IKEAhackers is very dear to me and I am soooo reluctant to give it up. I love this site’s community and what we have accomplished in the last 8 years. Secondly, I don’t have deep enough pockets to fight a mammoth company in court.

Needless to say, I am crushed. I don’t have an issue with them protecting their trademark but I think they could have handled it better. I am a person, not a corporation. A blogger who obviously is on their side. Could they not have talked to me like normal people do without issuing a C&D?

IKEAhackers.net was set up in 2006 and truly not with the intent to exploit their mark. I was a just crazy fan. In retrospect, a naive one too. It is not an excuse but that was just how it was when I registered IKEAhackers. Over the last 8 years the site has grown so much that I could not juggle the demands of a full time job and managing IKEAhackers. It also costs quite a bit to run a site this large. Since IKEA® does not pay me a cent, I turned to advertising to support myself and this site.

Now by June 23rd, I would need to take down the ads, not earn any income and still advance their brand on this site. Wonderful!

That’s the story thus far.

And a crucial turning point for IKEAhackers. Now is the time I need your support most .

I will move this site to a new domain in time to come. I don’t have a new domain name yet so I can’t direct you to it immediately. But I do want to let you know when the new site is launched. Please help me make this possible by subscribing to my mailing list so that I can update you when it happens and you can still find all the useful hacks when you need to. Signing up is FREE.

Iron hideaway By: Jules IKEAHacker

iron3

Materials: EXPEDIT, BESTA

I found on Amazon the mechanism for a folding iron table under Rayen’s brand. You can not just hang it on the wall or behind a door. It includes a metal plate that is attached to the board to place the hot iron.

So I used an EXPEDIT cabinet that I had and bought a wall unit BESTA and made my own iron hideaway.

Father’s Day Memories By: Grace Bonney

DSFATHERSDAY

One of my favorite memories from my childhood is sitting on my Dad’s shoulders as we would ride through wave after wave at the beach. I was terrified of water I couldn’t see through (still am), and I was convinced the ocean floor was covered with hundreds of hungry crabs waiting to nibble my toes. So my Dad would lift me up on his shoulders and wade into the waves, high enough that we could “jump” with each wave and just make it over them. I would scream with delight and felt, in those moments, like my Dad was the strongest, coolest person alive (he still is). So it’s with that in mind that we celebrate Father’s Day with a look back at some of our favorite bloggers’, authors’ and artists’ memories of their fathers. From touching moments over a breakfast table to some hilarious (and gnarly) episodes involving sick children, to deep and meaningful reflections about difficult relationships, these stories and memories are so genuine and open.

Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to share such personal moments with us here today: Victoria Smith, Will Taylor, Joanna Goddard, Matt Armendariz, Lisa Congdon, Julia Rothman, Jaime Derringer, Sara Jensen, Jan, Nikole Herriott, Cassandra LaValle, Michelle Adams, Amy Azzarito, Amy Merrick, Max Tielman. xo, grace

Poang Laptop Stand By: Jules IKEAHacker

poang-laptop5

Materials: POANG armchair, FROSTA stool

I find that Poang armchair is extremely comfortable.

I like to spend time on it reading or simply chilling out.

I often work at home so I decided to add a laptop stand to my Poang.

I fixed two hinges to the armchair

I didn’t want to ruin it with new holes so I decided to use the existing ones.

I took one leg from Frosta stool and I fixed it to the hinges.

Could working be more relaxing?

LOSJÖN Art Gallery By: Rosandra

losjon2

Materials: LOSJÖN hooks and string

This is an Art Gallery to exhibit at my children’s drawings and it is very easy to make: just fasten the LOSJÖN wall hooks using the self-adhesive backing or screw them into the wall randomly and then connect them together with a string like in the game where you join the dots.

Zenzational FOTO lamp By: Jules IKEAHacker

fotorobert

Materials: FOTO lamp shade

I bought a generic lamp ‘Foto’ and made a design inspired by the beautiful yet expensive lamps by Zenza.

I marked the design with pencil on the aluminium and drilled holes for three weeks (three sizes) and after a light polish the bowl is complete.

Hang the bowl upside down and use a diffuse lightbulb for a softer effect.
