Wickeltisch, HEMNES diaper changing table By: Markus

diaper changing table

Materials: 2x CD Rack, Ikea Hemnes

I used an old “Hemnes” sideboard.

I pulled the drawers out and painted the rest in white (little tricky on the side but it works. Use lots of “children safe” paint).

Then I broadened the depth with two CD racks to either side.

Be careful there ’cause you have to cut it up a little bit and add two new holes for the bottom. (It’s a little tricky to get the bottom shelf straight).

Then drill the CD racks onto the base of the Hemnes.

Add a new top. I used a two pieces of wood. The total size is 110cm x 75cm.

Then I used 10cm high blanks for the back and the sides. I sanded the sides by hand to take off all the edges. I made a separate shelf for the clean diapers and other stuff.

Painted that white as well.

Finally, I bought different drawer knobs from eBay to make it look different.

Place baby on top and change diaper.

Home Ec: How to Clean Upholstered Furniture By: Grace Bonney

Home Ec: How to Clean Upholstered Furniture

One of my major design struggles is balancing my love of upholstered anything with my love of animals. Whether it’s Turk scratching up the side of our sofa or Hope tracking in dirt or carrying her food onto the chair, we’re always dealing with some sort of upholstery clean up. Even if your home doesn’t include pets or children, regular use of any upholstered furniture will require cleaning and touch-ups at some point. I try to prevent anything major with semi-regular cleaning, but for today’s Home Ec post I wanted to share a guide to cleaning upholstered furniture and protecting it from pets. xo, grace

Samla Planter Box in Singapore By: Liskat

Samla planter ikea hack

The Background: After hunting around for pots to fill our huge 6-metre planter hole I thought I’d never find an affordable solution. Then, on a casual visit to my favourite Swedish furniture store, I spotted the Samla and something clicked!

I ran home, measured out the hole on my balcony and – lo and behold – I could fit 11 Samla containers for the price of one (yes, I do mean 1!) planter pot from one of the city’s garden centres.

Directions: This hack was really simple; just flip over the boxes and drill holes in the base to allow water to drain out (very important, you do not want soggy soil). I drilled 14 holes in the bottom and four more in the corners using a 6mm drill bit. Just be careful not to crack the bin while drilling, as I did with one of the holes. Apply a firm even pressure with the drill and you should be fine.

The Samla may not be the most elegant solution, but the planter hole is deep enough that you hardly see the containers and really only notice the plants.

My balcony is still a work in progress as I need to buy more plants, but I’m very happy with the results so far.

Hyllis Working/Dining Table By: Irman

Hyllis Working/Dining Table

Materials: LINNMON table top, HYLLIS shelving unit x 2, BOSSE bar stool x 2

I had an extra Linnmon table top from the office that I brought home, and wanted to transform it into a working countertop where we can eat at and do work standing up plus had some space for extra storage underneath. Had a couple of older Hyllis shelves, and after measuring I figured out the height would be just nice for the job.

Tools needed: Sheet iron tin snips, electric drill.

Use a 250mm tin snip, smaller than that you’re going to have trouble cutting the Hyllis. I tried it with a metal saw but was just too time consuming. Why I mentioned the older Hyllis shelf was that Ikea recently updated their Hyllis shelves, and made them more sturdier with extra folds on the sides, which made them harder to cut. The older ones where just plain 1mm sheet metal, and easy to cut with tin snips.

Assemble the Hyllis as per usual, except for the top shelf. Cut the pieces that holds all the shelves together just where the second from top shelf is. I drilled extra holes just below this second shelf, to add extra storage space using the unused top shelf.

Hyllis Working/Dining Table

Hyllis Working/Dining Table

After that it was just a matter of drilling 3 holes what is now the top shelf of the Hyllis onto the bottom of the Linnmon table top, and screwed them together. Repeat for the other Hyllis.

Took less than an hour, and you’ll end up with a nice standing-height table with storage space in the bottom. Fill up this storage space to further stabilize the table.

The Bosse bar stool fits in nicely underneath. For ours I basically stained using Antique Pine stain, and re-sanded it down again bit by bit to get that aged look.

Rebecca Clark By: Grace Bonney

Rebecca Clark

Over the past ten years there are definite areas and niches of design that I feel over-saturated with and need to avoid for a while. There was a moment when pillows with digitally printed patterns were at every booth at ICFF and while I appreciate the idea of a trend, a part of me grew tired of it and needed to keep walking. There are however a few areas of art and design I will never tire of: ceramics and illustration. I could wander through potter’s studios every day and the same goes for illustrators. I love discovering all the intricate details of their work and what makes their style their own, especially when it makes me think about color and line-quality in a new way.

The artwork of Rebecca Clark falls into that category for me. Her wonderfully watery illustrations remind me of Los Angeles and swimming pools and all things sunny and calm. Though she’s based in New York, that colorful West Coast feel is what I’m most drawn to her in work- although her drawings of decidedly NYC dog parks tug at my heart strings, too. It’s about 6 degrees upstate today so I’m going to keep looking at Rebecca’s work this morning in hopes that it can transport me somewhere a little toastier this morning. DIY a Stunning Gold Bookcase for Under $52 By: Barbara Miller

Vittsjo gold bookcase

Materials:

1 Vittsjo bookcase

4 8′ lengths of 3/4″ screen molding

Loctite Power Grab adhesive

Bright orange spray paint/primer

Rustoleum hammered gold spray paint

You will need to have a saw or a friend with a chop saw to cut the molding

Process:

bookcase-drawing

bookcase-close-up

First, I assembled the book shelf, leaving the glass shelves aside for installation at the end.

Next I measured and cut the lengths of screen molding. I cut them one at a time

I used the Loctite adhesive to put each piece into place before I cut the next length so I knew I always had the right direction of 45 degree angle because the screen molding has a right side and wrong side

Once all the wood pieces were in place and the adhesive had set I sprayed the entire piece a BRIGHT orange. I found that the gold paint on the black looked dull but if I put a bright, warm color on first I had a warmer gold finish.

Next, I sprayed the entire thing with the hammered gold paint (always follow the directions on your paint or other materials)

I put the shelf into place inside the house and then added the gold shelves

See tutorial.

Here is a link to the video tutorial.

Marble Concrete Wallpaper By: Grace Bonney

Lilesadi_Interior_Marble Concrete_Photowall_HR

Ever since we got a chance to use wallpaper in our house, I’ve had wallpaper on my mind. While my style tends to lean toward black and white patterns, I love this new “marble concrete” wallpaper from Dutch studio Lilesadi. Done in collaboration with Swedish wallpaper company Photowall, this new paper adds texture and depth to walls by also adding a bright bit of color. I love the way it feels like extending beautiful countertops to the wall in the best way possible. It’s as if your dream kitchen counters joined up with a great geometric pattern to create a mash-up wallpaper. The paper officially launches today, so if you want to check out the pattern in more detail or grab a roll for your house, click here to check it out. xo, grace
