Twin Rasts in the Nursery By: Jules IKEAHacker

mj1

Materials: Rast Chest of Drawers (x2) and Rast Bedside Table (x1), Length of dowel, Length of 2cmx 2cm lumber, BEHANDLA Glazing paint (antique), White Acrylic Undercoat, Brown Acrylic Paint

Description: When expecting our first baby (more than 2 years ago now, gosh time flies!) I thought it was about time I finally attempted a Rast Hack. It was to be be my first ever hack, and the million and one examples I’d seen online were rushing through my mind as I made the 400km drive to our nearest Ikea. How would I make mine different?

I simply stained all the Rast parts except the drawers along with the dowel and lumber with 2 coats of Ikea’s antique stain.

Then I painted the drawer fronts (with handles attached) with 2 coats of acrylic undercoat and traced the images I wanted to paint on with pencil (you can use a projector to do this if you have access to one, or a big sheet of tracing paper, or if you are artistically inclined, just freehand it!) And painted over with brown acrylic paint, handles and all. I just used the cheap stuff you get at the dollar store.

the only thing I would have done differently, is seal the drawer fronts with an acrylic sealer. at the time I couldn’t be bothered, and really likes the way the drawer fronts looked matte, but 2 and a bit years down the track, the white isn’t as white as it used to be, so a sealer would have helped.

Then I assembled the 2 Rast dressers, and used the top and bottom shelves of a Rast nightstand I had to make the connecting shelves in between. If you’re handy with a jigsaw you could probably just cut up two pieces for the job, but the nightstand is exactly the same depth as the chest of drawers, and it’s pre-drilled, so I got lazy and just used that (to be fair, I was 7 months pregnant!)

I simply drilled the bottom shelf from inside the 2 dressers using the Rast nightstand screws, but for the top shelf (because I wanted it to sit flush with the top of the Rast dresser) I nailed a length of 2cm squared timber on both sides for it to sit on. I didn’t attach it on top(it comes off very easily) because I knew we would be moving house and wanted to pull the 2 dressers apart for the move. Though you could certainly nail it down if you want it secured.

Then I cut a length of dowel as long as the Rast nightstand pieces and pre-drilled it either end and attached it from inside the dressers.

Voila! I think I came up with something original, but more importantly, It’s something that still makes me smile every time I walk into my son’s room. nothing beats something that you sorta kinda made yourself.

Lack Headboard By: Jules IKEAHacker

headboard1

Materials: Lack Table and Jansjo led lamp

Description: Had a bed without a headboard and didn’t know what to do with it. In the mean time, my daughter needed a bigger bed and that was when I had a idea after seeing some hacks on this web site.

I bought 5 Lack tables and glued them together. Used the legs to reinforce the back side with some metal plates and screws.

Bathroom rubbish bin/stool hack By: Quinkink

IMG_1517

Materials: MOLGER

Description: So we have this IKEA bathroom suite and we were looking for a suitable rubbish bin to include in it. IKEA doesn’t sell the piece of furniture any more but you can do the same with the MOLGER stool. We put in our units so the stool slips out of the way under the IKEA bathroom column.

MOLGER HACK 2

MOLGER HACK 4

The HACK : Basically you cut two of the wooden strips out in the side of the stool. You then use what you have just cut to make a nice opening in the stool. The photos are quite explicit.

Cut 20cm off two of the wooden strips. Start at 5,5cm from end of strip. You get 2 pieces of 20cm and a gaping hole in the stool.

Cut the two pieces up, each into another two pieces. One 8,4cm the other 11,6cm. Use the two 8,4cm pieces to make the gaping hole look nice. Use the two 11,6cm pieces to screw it all together from inside.

I used a jig saw and some small screws. Inside we have put a small plastic bucket that conveniently holds a bag for the rubbish.

Happy Hacking.

Custom size wardrobe By: cantuccini

This is not my first hack but my first submission at ikea hackers. The last four years I was looking around at different shops to buy a wardrobe covering our needs. At the end, due to the change of my occupation and the spare time in between, finally I made it myself.

The plan

First of all I made a round at the IKEA nearby and I took product papers of the modular systems PAX, FAKTUM, BESTA and STUVA. After studying a while I just realized, that there is no way to build my wardrobe just rearranging the modules. So I checked for a combination that takes the least effort to me. The result was a buying list as below.

Item list

  • 3 x PAX – 50x58x236 cm

  • 1 x PAX Vikedal – 50×229 cm

  • 1 x Fardal high gloss white – 50×229 cm

  • 1 x Abstrakt high gloss white – 40×195 cm

  • 1 x Abstrakt high gloss white drawer set – 40×70 cm

  • 5 x Faktum drawers 35×40 cm

Initial situation

Foto 001

Available Space: 2420x1410x505mm

The build

The adventure began downsizing the PAX elements to

  • H: 2328mm

  • D: 465mm

Because of the heating-cabinet behind the wardrobe, the side panel on the left hand side had been cut 10mm longer eg. 475mm. I began on the right hand side to build up the modified PAX and noticed very fast, that the construction is very unstable, due to the missing backwall.

Foto 7

The next step was to build the base of the wardrobe. This little skeleton lifts the PAX modules over the mopboards and make it look like a true wall wardrobe.

Foto 003

A detailed view of the decorative strip rasped down to the exact outline of the mopboard: The illusion is just perfect.

Foto 9

No room is exact in angle. After I had nearly finished modifying all PAX modules and built them up, I realized that the wardrobe is at the top 12mm more distant of the wall. In short I created a new skeleton to compensate for the angle. The Picture below shows the Kitchen drawers mounted in the meantime (FAKTUM).

At the end I mounted the Backwall to stabilize the construction and I arranged all wardrobe internals.
