Cheap coat racks By: Jules IKEAHacker

photo 2-767432

Materials: Satta knobs, 30″ long boards, power drill & bits, measuring tape, pencil

Description: This was a very easy project, using just a wooden board and the Satta knobs which are only $1.99/6-pack.

I first lightly sanded the boards, then drilled holes just big enough for the knob hardware to fit through. I measured out one hole per every 3″ with measuring tape, so 9 holes total, and marked that with a pencil. Unfortunately, my boards were too thick for the knobs to attach; I solved this problem by drilling holes large enough for the heads of the knob hardware (screws) to fit into. Then there was more of the screw sticking out of the smaller hole to screw the knob into.

After drilling the holes, I painted the boards black with Rustoleum semigloss paint (but you could stain the wood or use any paint you have). I then attached the knobs with the power drill (much faster than by hand), drilled two more holes for my wall screws, and screwed these into the wall in my closet.

I can hang so many coats/scarves/sweaters etc! I made 4 racks of 8 hooks each.

Fabric Covered IKEA Cork Board By: Jules IKEAHacker

Cork Board 1 (3)-758850

Materials: IKEA VÄGGIS Noticeboard (Cork Board), Fabric, Thumbtacks, Hot Glue Gun & Hot Glue

Description: This project was so much fun to complete! It cost less than $10 to create and only took 30 minutes to make. The supplies I used included this IKEA Vaggis Noticeboard (Cork board, Thumbtacks, Fabric (1/2 yard), and a hot glue gun. I chose to use duck cloth as it was thicker and I felt it would be more durable over time. When choosing thumbtacks, be sure to use the kind that are flat and look like nail heads.

Before starting the project, you will want to iron your fabric so that it is nice and smooth and free of any wrinkles.Next, lay the fabric over the cork board making sure to leave at least two inches extra on the sides. Begin pushing the thumbtacks one by one into the cork along the edge of the board. Continue putting thumbtacks in the cork until the perimeter of the board is covered.

Next, flip the board over and carefully cut off any excess fabric you have outside of the 2 inches that will be glued to the back of the board. After cutting, carefully pull the fabric and glue it tightly to the back of the board using a hot glue gun.

Voila! You have a customized fabric cork board! I love how it turned out and how simple it was to make.

Pacman scrotum crusher – FROSTA stool By: Jules IKEAHacker

PICT0007-794169

Materials: FROSTA stool

Description: I got the idea when I saw an interpretation of Valerie Solanas SCUM manifesto by the Swedish theater group “Turteatern”. The men had to sit on rather uncomfortable chairs while the women sat on comfortable cushions. The play is rather controversial (the actor had to live under police protection for a while since some men where unable to appreciate the satiric humor). I think it was rather funny. In any case – the “Pacman scrotum crusher” idea popped into my head after watching this play.

I don’t know if I have to explain how I did it, it seems rather obvious :) . Use a FROSTA stool. Just cut of a slice using a saw, then paint the edges and make an eye.

Custom Chalkboard Knuff By: Jules IKEAHacker

chalkboardKnuff1-704026

Materials: Knuff Magazine Files, 1.5 tsp unsanded white tile grout, 1 fl oz acrylic paint, plastic cup, plastic spoon, paintbrush, and chalk

Description: **Note: This might be bordering on simply repainting an item, but it might be a worthwhile resource to some Ikea Hackers out there that they’re not limited to store-bought colors of chalkboard paint for their projects. Anyways…**

I gave my Knuff files a base layer of paint (white on the sides, teal on the visible sides). When the base layer was dry, I mixed up 1.5 tsp unsanded white tile grout and half a tube of acrylic craft paint and then painted the visible sides of the magazine files. After two or three coats of the custom chalkboard paint dried, I slated it with a piece of chalk and then rubbed the chalk residue off. At this point, my custom-color Knuff files were ready for use.

With custom chalkboard paint, I was able to make these Ikea Knuff magazine files match the teal accents that appear throughout my home.
