Lena Corwin Tie-Dye Quilt By: Grace Bonney

lenaheader

I love my borough, but Brooklyn has been a little less colorful since Lena Corwin moved back to San Francisco. Forever my textile idol, Lena has been designing (and illustrating) the most inspiring and beautiful patterns and textiles for years and her work will always be at the top of my “must have” list. Lena has been sharing her love of printmaking and dyeing with other design fans through classes held in her Brooklyn home and through the incredible books she published on printmaking and handmade goods. And as much as I adore Lena’s prints, I’ve always had a major soft spot for the tie-dye projects she does, so I was thrilled to see she’s designed a new reversible cotton quilt (finished with a tie-dye print). One side has a sweet floral print that reminds me of Lena’s earlier design work and the other has a beautiful indigo blue tie-dye pattern. I wanted to hear more about Lena’s process and what inspired this new piece, so I asked her to fill us in on the back story. I hope you’ll enjoy hearing more about her latest design! xo, grace

Shower base from IKEA SAMLA plastic box By: Jules

Material: SAMLA box

This is a shower base created with Ikea’s plastic box, SAMLA.

As I did not find a regular shower base that could fit in the space I had for it, I had to create it with Ikea’s box. For this, I made a wooden platform in order to elevate the box and be able to connect the water pipe. It works perfectly and better than a regular shower base. As the box is high, the water never comes out.

Note: For safety, you may want to place an anti-slip mat inside the base. ~ Jules

Fruit baskets instead of peg baskets By: Sammy

3x3

Materials: BAREN, LACK, TORKIS

I was looking for a space saving solution, and finally found the TORKIS basket for clothes pins for my purpose. I simply screw the towel rail BAREN on the LACK shelf and clipped the baskets at the rail. A little inscription on the baskets and: READY ;)

After the Jump: Turning Fear Into the Courage to Ask for What You Really Want By: Grace Bonney

afterthejump-2

This week’s radio show got to the heart of something I think about a lot: fear. For me, fear is both a huge obstacle and motivator. There are days when I’m able to feel that familiar terror creep in and remember to run through it to the other side and days when I crumble and let it just sink in a bit longer. But lately I’ve been fed up with the crumbling and want to spend more time using that nervous or scared energy to push through to new skills, experiences and opportunities, rather than letting it sideline me again. So today I asked one of the bravest women I know, my wife, to join me on air to discuss the ways in which anyone can learn to face fears, push past them and use them to discover the things you really want in life.

In addition to sharing personal stories of fear, success and failure, we break down the simple steps that anyone can use to push past scary moments. The overview? You need to acknowledge and envision your worst fears, talk them through, assess the cost of not trying something scary and imagine yourself being able to achieve at least the first step toward your bigger goals. We’ll break down the process in easy-to-digest steps on air, so I hope you’ll join us for the conversation. And I’d love to hear your stories of running toward the things that are scary and making that leap to the other side. Whether you fell and learned a lesson or managed to jump and land on your feet, your stories are helpful to everyone reading here. Thanks so much to Julia for joining me on air and to all of you for listening. xo, grace

How to Whitewash Furniture By: Grace Bonney

-1

Summertime puts me in the mood for lighter tones and a more beachy, bleached-out color palette. In the spirit of adding that summery feel to my home year-round, I decided to try my hand at whitewashing a piece of wood furniture. I picked up at the flea market a table that had a beat-up, dark brown finish but elegant, clean lines. After a little experimenting I’m happy to report that it’s easy to achieve really pro-looking results on your own. Click “play” to watch and learn, and check out the full list of materials and step-by-step instructions on One Kings Lane’s Style Blog! And for more fun projects, check out my Weekend Decorator page, and get a behind-the-scenes look at what I’m working on right now over on Instagram. -Megan
