A library on wheels By: Olivier Georg

Materials: Expedit, Linnmon

Description: I live in a duplex in which the upper floor has an inclined ceiling. In a corner I have my computer desk, and behind my back the ceiling is pretty low, and I need to make the most of it. So I thought of something like this, using three 2×2 EXPEDIT modules on wheels with a LINNMON table top on it.

So the list of purchase is:

From IKEA:

+ 3 2×2 EXPEDIT modules

+ 2 75cmx150cm LINNMON table tops

From a local DIY store:

+ 2 3cm x 3cm, 240cm long wood strip

+ 1 1cm x 3cm, 240cm long wood strip

+ 6 side casters (to be placed on top of the modules)

+ 6 small plastic caster (which will touch the sides of the top of the modules)

+ 12 medium rubber caster (under the modules, they’re a bit more expensive, but I do not want to leave marks on the wooden floor)

First I assembled the EXPEDIT modules, and placed them in place, and put the LINNMON table top above. As the wall behind my desk has a radiator, it restricts the length I have, so I had to cut the table top. Moreover, the corner is not 90 degrees, so I had to cut it accordingly. I used a circular saw for that purpose.

I also estimated the height I would need, and cut the other table top to use it as a side. Now LINNMON table tops have wood strips on four sides, but the middle is made of cardboard honeycomb, and I had to reinforce the side I had cut. For this purpose I had to reduce a strip of 3×3 to 3×2,8, and cast it inside the side. I then assembled the two table tops with three dowels.

Now to guide the modules smoothly, I used 3×3 wood strip, glued and screwed below the top, to which I screwed the small plastic custers, and on which roll the side custers. To place correctly the strips, I worked upside down. The spacing was like this:

+ Side table top

+ 1cm wide wood strip

+ 1cm empty space

+ EXPEDIT module

+ 1cm empty space

+ 3cm wide wood strip

+ 1cm empty space

+ EXPEDIT module

+ 1cm empty space

+ 3cm wide wood strip

+ 1cm empty space

+ EXPEDIT module

+ 1cm empty space

+ 3cm wide wood strip

I used bits of 1×3 wood strips to obtain the correct spacing. Making the guides themselves was a bit more complicated, as I had to use a router to make holes for the small plastic casters.

Finally to fix the table top to the wall, I used pieces of angle frames I had, screwing them to the wall and below the table top.

Upside down work lamp as a bedside lamp By: Jules IKEAHacker

IMG_6501

Materials: Forså and Lack shelf

Description: We had two set of PAX wardrobes in our bedroom side wall but we wanted to do something different. We decided to use straight timber panels and put the PAX wardrobes one each side of the bed.

The space between the wardrobes and bed was so narrow that we didn’t want to put lights on nightstands. Instead we used two Forså work lamps attached to Lack shelf above the bed. And it worked even better than we thought.

First you need to take the metal weight out from the base of Forså. There’s one nut under the base that holds the weight and lamp together. Use ratchet to get it of.

Then drill three holes to the base and three holes to the Lack shelf in the same pattern as you drilled the base. Attach the lamps to the shelf with long enough bolts, wingnuts and washers.

See more of the upside down bedside lamp.

BRANAS kitchen trash can By: Jules IKEAHacker

Materials: (1) BRANAS rattan laundry basket, (2) BUMERANG skirt hangers, (1) 11 gallon trash bag

Description: I wanted an aesthetically pleasing trash can for our kitchen; the BRANAS rattan laundry basket turned out to be quite perfect.

Step 1: I setup up the BRANAS rattan laundry basket as specified (including the cloth liner which prevents the plastic garbage bag from snagging on the rattan material.

rsz_img_20130829_114659

Step 2: Then I used two BUMERANG skirt hangers to clip the 11 gallon trash bag on either side. This trick holds the bag completely open, and to change the bag just lift both hangers out!

IKEA table top = Wall decoration By: irwan

photo (2)

Materials: IKEA table top

Description: We have 2 units of IKEA table top at home to make long work desks. Now that we bought an exercise running machine to put in the same room we had to reduce the work desk to 1. Initially we didn’t know what to do with the table (we have enough tables in the room). So we decided to hang to the wall (rather keep in the store) and put few empty frames on it. So that if we need to use the table top again, we would just bring it down from the wall and attach the legs. It was my wife’s idea and she sorted the frame position.

George ‘ikea’ Nelson shelving By: Jules IKEAHacker

IMG_0424

Materials: STOLMEN SHELF W110XD50, STOLMEN W55XD50,STOLMEN Cabinet w/2 doors W11xD45, HEKTAR wall spotlight, EKBY JARPEN shelf, EKBY BJARNUM bracket, EKBY RISET bracket for sloping wall,

Description: This inspiration came from Mid-Century modern design and architecture scene from its early years by George Nelson. This CSS shelving unit is still up to now most wanted unit because of its functionality and appealing look in today’s new home modern design.

Now, to start, first I cut the Upright shelving unit into half by hacksaw and filing it sharp edges then, you have to make a two hole 1/4″ inch close to the edge to make way to attach a small bracket that you’re going to attach to the wall. This will serve as a strong foundation in putting the IKEA EKBY JARPEN shelf unit. It must be one at a time, in putting up the half-upright shelves then, measure-up your EKBY JARPEN length to get the exact measurement for the next half-upright shelving.

Now, you are ready to attach the STOLMEN 2 door cabinet unit to the wall provided by its sets of screw. I recommend to use a spirit-level and MUST be another person or two to assist you in attaching it to the wall or if it’s only you just get a set of block stand as a support to your STOLMEN cabinet in your desired height.

If your EKBY JARPEN is gonna be too long just use a EKBY BJARNUM bracket for the EKBY JARPEN extension then you’re good to go. The STOLMEN shelf white W110xD50 or STOLMEN W55xD50 shelf will serve as a table desk but it will depend on how long you want to put your CSS Shelving, in this case 110 cm and 55 cm. Then to support it, you need a EKBY RISET bracket for sloping wall to use it as a bracket. I managed to choose this, because I want to sit it securely to the edge of the STOLMEN shelf and to the Upright shelves. Good luck to all!
