Just Outside of Toronto, A Condo Filled With Things Loved By: Sabrina Smelko

Just Outside of Toronto, A Condo Filled With Things Loved

Defining what my home style is is something I find very difficult (and I think many people do). I don’t follow a specific trend and, other than using Pinterest to compile inspiration, I find it hard to pin down (pun intended) how to describe it other than a smorgasbord of things I love and things I need, simply put together in a way I enjoy. And I think it’s that way for many people — at least it was for graphic designer and blogger Amy Carillo.

Neighboring Toronto in the suburbs of Mississauga, this 850-square-foot personality-filled condo is home to Amy and her husband and business developer, David Carrillo. It’s close enough to the hustle and bustle of the city where they both work, but tucked away enough in the suburbs of Mississauga, close to Amy’s family. Their home doesn’t follow a specific style, but rather is filled with things they love. For two years Amy tried to decorate their space in a specific style only to be left confused: “After two years, I still didn’t love how our space looked or felt,” says Amy, “I realized there really are no rules. If I just stick to what I truly love, without sacrificing function, then everything will work out… In the end, if it makes sense to you and makes you happy, that’s all that matters.” Together, they’ve managed to transform a cookie-cutter condo into a home with plenty of personality and personal touches. Most of their wall art is paintings they created and photographs from their travels, and a majority of their furniture is either thrifted, hand-me-downs or DIY, all with a story behind them.
