Studio Tour: Stone and Sawyer By: Grace Bonney

Studio Tour: Stone and Sawyer

I am constantly amazed by the wealth of talent right here in our back yard here of the Catskills. The eastern side of the Hudson River (Hudson, Beacon, Rhinebeck, etc.) has long-been associated with incredible artists, museums and workshops, but I’m a big fan of the work happening here on the western side of the river, where tiny studios are tucked into unassuming cabins and light-filled barns all across Ulster, Delaware, Sullivan and Greene counties (and then some). Maybe it’s all the fresh air, an abundance of trees and mountains or just the freedom of being able to create in larger spaces, but so many artists seem to flock here after life in the city to make something special.

Two of those people are David Ryan and Art Director Julian Peploe. Both artists have incredible backgrounds of their own (David is a celebrated painter and Julian is the former Vice President of design for Epic Records and was nominated for a Grammy for his work) but when they came together to start Stone and Sawyer, a newly-launched handcrafted lighting company, their talents combined to create something truly special.

From their studio in Delhi, New York, David and Julian produce beautiful elements like ceramic bodies and black walnut necks for their lighting, as well as sourcing lampshades and fixtures from talented makers here in the US. Their of work has elements of sculpture to it and I love the curves of their lamp forms juxtaposed with the straight lines of linen shades. This spring Stone and Sawyer launched three new lamps, the Porter, Heyward and Lancaster and they have several more coming up later this year. We were so excited to see their work in progress that Max visited them in their Catskills studio to see how it all came together. I’m so envious of their light-filled studio and I love seeing all those rows of ceramic bases just waiting to be used.
