Growing up, there’s always that one person in your school that you know is going to make it big one day. They have that certain something – a drive that stands out from the crowd and talent that goes well beyond their years. For me, that person was someone I met when I was 12 years old at a summer camp in West Virginia.
Anna Sale was the coolest girl at Camp Alleghany (that’s Anna and me below, with our friend Liz Costigan). Seemingly unaffected by trends, cliques or most of the things the rest of us worried about, Anna always seemed to me like she knew exactly who she was at a time when most of us were still struggling to fit in. She had one foot in the future – and adulthood – in a way I completely envied. She listened to the best music, and cared about the environment and feminism in a way that I hadn’t even begun to consider. After college and several moves, we reconnected in Brooklyn 10 years later and I was overjoyed, but not surprised, to find out she was already making a huge impression on the world of political journalism.
After working as a reporter for West Virginia Public Broadcasting and WNPR in Connecticut, Anna moved to New York City where she worked as a producer for The Takeaway, a show produced by WNYC and Public Radio International. She now works as a politics reporter for WNYC where she hosts her truly brilliant podcast, Death, Sex and Money, which Buzzfeed recently named one of the top 12 podcasts that will “make you a better human” and is in the #1 spot on the iTunes podcast charts. Anna has interviewed everyone from Jane Fonda and Ellen Burstyn to comedian Chris Gethard and former NFL player, Domonique Foxworth. I was honored to interview her on the radio this week and loved hearing her thoughts on women in the media, podcasting and how simply listening to people’s stories can be life changing.
