Butterflies in Wood: A Tradition + Trend Coming Back By: Grace Bonney

Butterflies in Wood: A Tradition + Trend Coming Back

One of my favorite aspects of design is seeing how trends come and go and come again over the years. Decorative details that have their roots in the distant past come back in cycles as newer generations discover them and fall in love for the first time. We’ve seen this happen with so many design patterns, colors and techniques, but lately it seems that butterfly joints have become a go-to detail in the woodworking that fills shops and online stores everywhere.

A butterfly joint is a traditional joint used to connect wooden boards or prevent further splitting in already damaged boards. There are few skills and trades as old as woodworking, but its recent resurgence in popularity (in both professional and hobbyist forms) means that people are rediscovering techniques and tools with fresh eyes. I’ve enjoyed seeing butterfly joints pop up in just about every form, from functional uses in furniture to decorative metal detailing in high-end pieces and cutting boards. Whether you’re learning about butterfly joints for the first time or are continuing to enjoy their beauty and function, I hope these pieces will inspire you to try them in your home.
