BH&G DIY-ify: Color Block Serving Tray DIY From Chelsey Andrews

Today's Inspiration comes from Better Homes and Garden's Style Spotters Chelsey Andrews.

Color Block Serving Tray DIY

Hosting a party is fun. Your friends are there, you’re wearing your favorite outfit, all that delicious food, and the special serveware you save just for these occasions. My Color Block Serving Tray DIY is perfect for your next party. If you’re anything like me and my friends, then you probably prefer snacky party food over a meal. Appetizers everywhere, all the cheese and salami, and some tasty drinks. Serving trays make it so easy to move food around and it makes the food look fantastic.

Color Block Serving Tray DIY

This tray isn’t just for serving goodies at a party. I think it would be a great bar tray to store your wine and bar ware, or keep it near the entrance of your home for a place to keep your keys/sunglasses/and phone.

Supplies:

  • 24 inch x 12 inch x 1 inch Poplar wood piece (if you use a different type of wood, make sure to avoid porous woods)
  • 2 cabinet drawer pulls with screws (I used the champagne bronze 3 inch Brainerd pulls from Lowes)
  • Paint (I used this small sample bottle of Valspar Belle Grove Sorbet)
  • Paint brush
  • Painters tape
  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • Cabinet bumpers
  • Optional: Food safe block oil (I recommend this if you will be placing food on the tray)

Directions:

Step 1

STEP 1:

Prep the wood by sanding any sharp edges (if needed). Clean off any dust particles. Grab the painters tape and start to mark off little triangle sections on the board. Note: since I plan to put food directly on this board, I kept the triangles to the edges of the board. Food should not come in contact with the paint.

Step 2

STEP 2:

Paint two to three coats of paint over the taped off triangle sections. Let the paint dry completely. When the paint is dry, remove the painters tape.

Step 3

STEP 3:

Grab a pencil and measure in about 1 1/2 inches in from each edge and mark the drill holes for the drawer pulls. Screw the handles into the tray and add bumpers to the back of the tray. If you will be serving food on the board, add the block oil to the wood and let dry completely, then you’re done!
