Side hall table: Open University assignment By: Greg Przybyszewski

tacing pap present 2

Materials: KNUFF storage unit, NIPEN legs, ALBERT shelving unit

My hack is a part of my design module assignment. I study Design at Open University and hacking Ikea was our task. It is only idea in drawings and CAD presentation, not a real piece of furniture, but I thought it could be interesting for you :)

I used mainly Knuff storage unit, Nipen legs and Albert shelving unit elements to strengthen the structure and mount the legs.

Bathroom Vanity and Medicine Cabinet By: Architect Al

2014-02-27 19.31.20

This is a funny site…Just stumbled on it. I don’t know the names of the items I used, because I did this so long ago (2003 to be exact).

The “bathroom vanity” pictured is actually a kitchen or utility cabinet they used to sell. When we moved into our house, we needed more kitchen cabinets, but didn’t want to spend a lot of money because we knew we were going to gut the house. So, we bought that cabinet and top and had it as a freestanding unit. After we tore apart the house and rebuilt it, we were broke so we couldn’t afford a bathroom vanity so we re-purposed this cabinet. The plumber cut the sink in and installed it, along with the faucet. A few years later, I added some shelves internally as well as a pull-out tray for better usage.

Regarding the medicine cabinets…those actually are Ikea medicine cabinets. The asymmetrical placement was done to distract from the fact that the electrician didn’t center the electrical box on the wall (he centered it on the rough plumbing…DUH!). So I created a playful arrangement that is off center in the space, but does not highlight the electrical error.

…did you notice the cracked countertop at the faucet? I did that about 8 months ago. The faucet was loose and I was tightening it up from underneath, Forgetting that the countertop is HOLLOW core, I overtightened and cracked it. OOPS!

…anyway, I hope you find this useful.

New life for EKTORP By: AgaP./patchworkandco.com

ektorp2

Materials: EKTORP sofa

Who doesn’t know this Ikea evergreen? Unassuming and safe, which makes it fit in perfectly into any interior…but I decided to take Ektorp out of its comfort zone and make it into a sofa with character!

ektorpbefore

I dyed the beige cover black, a little unevenly to make it a bit more cool and laid back. Then I got rid of the back cushions and replaced them with a freestyle mix of pillows of various sizes…and voila!

Simple Nightstand Remix By: joy

IKEAHackersNightstand

Materials: Hemnes nightstand

I had two black/brown Hemnes nightstands that were begging for a facelift. I recently replaced my dark Hemnes dressers with a mid-century pair, but I really liked the shape and function of the nightstands, so I decided to aim for a trendy white & wood combo.

I started by sanding off the black finish on the drawers with my palm sander. Then I added a rich walnut stain and poly coat.

I primed and painted the rest of the nightstand white. It took several coats to get complete coverage over the black.

I added some brass bar pulls from Anthropology, and Voila! New nightstands.

Hemnes Bridging Wall Shelf Bench/Toy Storage By: Sonja

Ikea Hack Hemnes Wall Shelf - Sweet Seattle Life

Materials: Hemnes wall unit

We had a tricky space to fill in our daughter’s nursery: very narrow and rather short. All of the regular bookshelves and media units were too wide and wouldn’t allow for the closet door (not shown) to open. So we assembled the shorter Hemnes wall unit and beefed it up with two 3/4 plywood boards, screwed on legs, and a thick foam bench seat (covered with Ikea fabric). Added a few drawers, and presto, bench and toy storage unit.

Hifi Pig CD Rack By: Stuart

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Materials: Capita legs, drawer fronts (name unknown)

Found a load of drawer fronts at IKEA over the weekend for 50 cents each and thought they’d make excellent shelves for my CDs without me having to buy and saw wood to fit. I have NO DIY skills.

Capita legs are simply screwed onto the middle and each end of the drawer fronts.

Each part of the shelf is essentially an individual shelf that rests on the one below. Each shelf is also attached to the wall with a little L shaped bracket – this is essential.

Works a treat and I still have another 22 drawer fronts to build another 2 units which will just about hold he rest of the CDs we have.

Each shelf cost €3.50

Ikea distillery design By: B's-brouwsel

IkeaHack

Materials: DILLKOT pressure cooker

I’ve turned the pressure cooker into a alcohol distillery. Unfortunately the pressure cooker isn’t available any more. The product get’s stored in the Korken bottles from Ikea :)

00-IkeaDILLKOTT-Ticket

Now the setup.

01-Construction

Before I build something I like to draw it out. This is the construction manual. As you can see the centerpiece is the Ikea pressure cooker. Also because I don’t want this installation in my living room 24/7 I made it detachable. The bridge (Dutch “brug”) can come off. Once it is detached it all fits in the brown wooden box (made that one also).

02-CapAssembly

The cap of the pressure cooker needs to be adjusted to get the steam (with alcohol) out of the cooker into the worm. So I made a hole in it and with some tools I attached the copper pipe. It’s important to know that there is no pressure on the pressure cooker. I use an open system. If there was pressure on the cooker and the steam comes out it may catch fire and… explode.

03-AssembledCap

The result of the assembly. This had to be done right the first time, if I’ve messed up the cap isn’t usable any more.

04-Worm

This is a tricky part. Because of the small barrel it’s very difficult to get the worm right. On the top of the barrel the worm starts and on the bottom the worm comes out. I’ve made this as long as possible. The longer it is the more time it has to turn into liquid. If you have a very strong and awesome cooling system you can make it shorter.

05-Kist

I’ve already mentioned that I don’t want the installation in my living room all the time so I’ve made a wooden box. This is the construction manual I made and used :) I’m very happy with the result. This is a hobby not everyone needs to know so it’s handy to be able to tuck it away.

07-Result

The whole setup :)

06-Setup

#1 My own made wash (wash has no grain in it, if it has, it’s called a mash). This is a mixture of sugar, %$#*, lemon, tomato, %$#* and a lot of water.

#2 The Ikea pressure cooker Dillkott. Cook the wash so the alcohol comes out, not too warm because the alcohol evaporates quicker and that’s what I need.

#3 The bridge. This takes the steam which carries the alcohol into the worm.

#4 The barrel with the worm in it. The hot steam (with the alcohol) comes in and the cooled water inside the barrel makes it liquid again. And there we have it! Almost pure alcohol.

#5 You need a lot of jars to catch the alcohol. Simply because you have to calculate the head, center cuts and tails. You only use the center cut!

#6 A simple water pump. It pumps the hot water from the top of the barrel (with the worm in it) into the barrel with cold water in it and then back into the barrel with the worm on the bottom. So that the water circulates. This makes the hot steam turn into liquid.

#7 The end result! Four jars with alcohol. I’ve already made the cuts here. The head can’t be used again so it get’s thrown away. The tail can be used with the next run. The center cuts are used to make great liqueur!

It’s a very good and tasty hack!
