Summer Desktop Wallpapers + Best of the Web By: Grace Bonney

Screen Shot 2014-07-04 at 11.42.42 AM

Happy 4th of July everyone! The East Coast seems to be under a constant blanket of rain right now, but hopefully everyone else will be able to enjoy some fireworks and lots of summer fun for the holiday weekend. Our team is taking the day off, but I wanted to end the weekend by sharing some beautiful #dssummer themed desktop wallpapers that artist Maria Schoettler created for all of us! Maria is based in Oakland, California where she focuses on documenting and celebrating the beauty of food and plants. She became so enamored of her neighborhood farmer’s market and the colors of her weekly market trips, that she decided to create her own guide of what to look for at the market each season, which turned into a beautiful “Eat Local” series. In addition to a Eat Local Calendar, Maria also produced a line of note cards, bread bags and prints inspired by the bounty of her local market. Today she’s sharing two summer-inspired produce illustrations that represent the rich colors and natural beauty of the farmer’s market. Each of Maria’s illustrations, berries and watermelons, are available to download here on DS today! So if you need a little summer pick-me-up or just a reminder to eat more fresh local fruit, I hope you’ll enjoy them and the desktop (and phone!) refresher as much as we are. Thank you so much to Maria for creating these for us and I hope you’ll check out her website for more beautiful seasonal illustrations. Until Monday, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! xo, grace

Marius “Magic Wand” Bar Stool By: Michael

01

Materials: MARIUS stool

10

I was amazed when I searched for stools for my kitchen island and found this kind of furniture is quite more expensive than you could imagine for what it appears to be.

So I thought to make an IKEA hack or allow me to say a magic wand trick and transform that cheap trusty Marius stool on to a 65cm kitchen island stool.

I used some scrap aluminium parts that I had around, pipes and rods, with the help of the lathe and the circular saw I made 8 extensions too build two extra stools for the kitchen island.

It is cool and stackable and it looks like magic wands!

Standing Desk LINNMON ADILS “Standing Desk on the Cheap Version 2″ By: Fatcat

Adils PVC 2

Adils PVC 1

I read that in a standard 8 hour workday, the average person can burn 400-450 more calories simply by standing. So, I decided to turn my Linnmon with standard Adils legs into a standing desk. The original desk was 29.5″ high from the floor to the tabletop. With this hack, it is 41.5″ off the ground. I am 5’10″ and this works well for me. I am using a monitor arm to keep my monitor closer to eye level. Keep this is mind.

This long Linnmon table has 5 legs.

You will need:

5 pieces of 1.5″ x 2′ PVC pipes – these are pre-cut at Home Depot in the plumbing section. $2.89 each

Note: Take one of the Adil legs with you to the store. I found that some of the PVC pipes were too tight for the legs since the fit is very snug. Fit each PVC pipe with the leg to make sure every pipe can accommodate the Adils leg. And I strongly recommend a 2′ piece because the longer this PVC pipe, the more stable the unit will be (this is from trial and error from an earlier hack).

3 pieces of 1″ x 2′ PVC pipes – these are also pre-cut but you need to have them cut in half to make 6 12″ pieces (12″ length for each leg with one piece left over). $1.79 each

Note: This is the part that determines how high the tabletop will be. If you want the table to be more than 41.5″ high, these pieces will need to be longer and thus you may need more than 3 pieces of the 2′ pipe. So, make sure 41.5″ is the right height for you by measuring your elbow height off the ground with your arms folded at 90 degrees and make the necessary changes.

5 pieces of 1.5″ PVC cap. $0.96 each

Directions:

1. Put the caps on the end of the 1.5″ PVC pipe.

2. Put the 1″ PVC pipe inside the 1.5″ PVC pipe.

3. Fit the Adils with the extension. Make sure the fit is snug and the Adils are resting firmly on the 1″ PVC pipe inside the 1.5″ PVC pipe.

Done!

Total cost excluding table and taxes: $24.62

My inspiration for this hack came from someone else’s earlier hack but I don’t have a drill press so I decided to use 1″ PVC pipe inside the 1.5″ instead.

I hope this cheap hack works for you!

Foto Passive Sound Amplifier By: Bryan

DSCN0212 (640x480)

Materials: FOTO lamp shade

Saw something similar at another really high end furniture store. Waay to expensive but kinda cool.

Used a Foto light shade and wood scraps in my garage to create the amplifier. Wood holder centers the speaker of a Galaxy S4 right in the middle as well as provides a nice stabilizer for a stand.

Built the stand and attached it to the back of the lamp shade. Not bad sound, relatively speaking, and surprisingly fills the room.

You can also just lay the phone in the back, it fits nicely. But the sound gets dramatically better when you center the speaker.

Will be working on a iPhone version by request. (my daughter). Speakers are in a different place so will need some design work to channel the sound.

Mantlepiece with DVD storage By: vjcrcr

ikeahacker-mantlepiece1

Materials: Benno DVD tower (£18). Lack Wall shelf – (£19) for 190cm. Lack Wall shelf – (£10) for 110cm

Living in a small apartment means that storage is difficult, especially when my girlfriend has so many shoes. And then there’s the whole argument about having DVDs on show or in cupboards. So when we decided to add a fireplace to our living room, we came up with a compromise. The DVDs are visible when you want to see them, but not noticeable most of the time.

ikeahacker-mantlepiece2

Saw the Benno in half.

Face the two halves away from each other.

Get your 190cm Lack on top and screw them together.

Grab a couple of brackets and screw the smaller lack to the top piece.

Done.
