Personalized Gift Box By: magny tjelta

Personalized Gift Box

Materials: RYSSBY 2014

I’m always looking for new ways to wrap gifts. Since there making things and being creative is a big part of my life, I have often tried to make the gifts unique. This time I was inspired to try out drawing on these black box with my POSCA pens. all you need to do is to have a pen that can draw on black. And find something you want to draw, it can be done quite easy. if you do not know how to draw, drawing zig zag or circles, or write a poem.

Map out my drawers By: Nina Thomas

Decoupage map on drawers

This is an old one, I don’t think they make this dresser anymore — it was from the Billy series if I recall correctly. It has 8 narrow drawers. This hack would work for any dresser, though. The one I had was bright red and birch, and I decided to repurpose it for the nursery.

Primed, painted it white, and then Mod-Podged sections of a world map to the drawer fronts. Added library label-holders both for appearance and to remember what was where. :-)

Laura Carlin Animal Tiles By: Grace Bonney

Hand-Painted-Tiles-Cat-Dog-Laura-Carlin-the-new-craftsmen-0021-646x646

The older I get, the more I feel drawn to artwork that has a slightly childlike feel to it. Whether it’s beautifully illustrated storybooks or painterly versions of household pets, this style of artwork always tugs at my heartstrings a little more strongly than any other. I’ve never bothered to play armchair psychiatrist and diagnose myself, so instead I embrace this artwork with abandon and celebrate its simplicity and ability to transport me to a place and time when the world feels so fresh and new and exciting.

Laura Carlin is a UK-based illustrator and ceramicist whose work combines a wonderful sense of color and texture with a childlike whimsy and otherworldly quality that I can’t get enough of. Laura published an illustrated book with Phaidon last year, A World of Your Own , that I scooped up and instantly added to my bedside collection of nightly reads. As much as I enjoy Laura’s work on paper, I love the way it comes alive on ceramics. She recently introduced this sweet series of animal tiles at The New Craftsmen (an excellent site for handmade work) that I absolutely adore. From playful cats and dogs to roaring lions and curious bears, it’s just the sort of artwork that makes me want to stop everything and find a place for it in my home. I think it would be incredibly fun and heartwarming to encounter a single set of these tiles mixed into regular tiles on a kitchen backsplash or in the shower. For me, this is the perfect mix of grown-up and storybook imagination that I’m always looking for. Click here to check out and shop Laura’s tile collection online. xo, grace

Hackers Help: Turning Erikslund into picture frame? By: Mike

erikslund-picture__0208205_PE362134_S4

Photo: IKEA.com

Hi all

I bought an Erikslund picture recently, which has exactly the right dimensions to frame a painting I already have.

I have undone the staples to remove the back, and removed the glue keeping the glass in place, and replaced it with a custom-cut pane of clear PVA.

The problem I have is that the inside of the frame, which was hidden due to the frosted glass, now shows through since I am mounting my painting at the back of the frame (deep-mounted) – and it is untreated, while the rest of the frame which was always visible, is black.

So what paint should I use to make the frame more uniform? Any old black wood paint from my local hardware? Spray paint?

Any ideas please?

Built-in Bookshelves with RAST drawer base By: Shannon George

New Shelves 1 (1)

Materials: Two RAST 3-drawer chests

I have always wanted built-in bookshelves. I had intended to do the typical Billy Bookcase hack, but decided I wanted some closed storage and a bit more detail. I got on the IKEA website and found the RAST 3-drawer chest. Just what I needed.

Base of Bookshelves

First I made a small base out of 1×3′s for the chests to sit on. After building the chests, I built a small shelf out of 1×12′s to span the gap between them. I screwed everything together and secured the entire unit to the wall. I made a new top for the base out of stained 1×3 pine boards. I then made the top unit out of 1×10′s and trimmed it out with 1×2′s and 1×3′s. I dressed it up with a little bead board for good measure and added new hardware on the chests. After all that and a few coats of paint, I have a beautiful new built-in bookshelf with storage that is functional and takes up very little space in my small 10×12 room.

The BEKVÄM lends a hand in X-Ray CT Scanner research By: Gary Schajer and Anthony An

Ikea X-Ray CT Scanner

Materials: BEKVÄM kitchen cart

This is a homemade X-ray CT scanner designed to find the positions of knots in logs. It was made as part of a PhD thesis research at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. An X-ray source on the right side, just out of the picture, shines X-rays through the log towards the detector (the large white box behind the log). The two Ikea carts support the log specimen within the X-ray beam. They are shortened and attached on wheeled platforms that run along tracks on the floor and move the log forward in a spiral motion through the X-ray beam. The black panels in the background hold thick lead sheets to enclose the X-rays.

The radiograph at the lower left is a “chest X-ray” of the log. The dark shadows indicate the knots. The image at the right is an example CT cross-section.

Trade Show Booth on a budget By: Don Cusick

Trade Show Booth on a budget

Materials: 59″ Linnmon Table Top, Gerton adjustable legs, Spontan magnet boards

I needed an inexpensive professional looking booth for a trade show. Since they cost 10s of thousands of dollars I decided to try a IKEA hack.

I took the Linnmon desk top and used a circular saw to cut it in half. This gave us two nice thin pieces to create our bar. One problem was the the middle of these desktops are corrugated cardboard! So on the back end we used some white quarter round strip and caulk to make it look nice. The customer doesn’t see this side so no big deal.

Next we drilled two additional locations for the telescope legs and mounted them. They work great for un-even surfaces as you can adjust each leg by itself. Next we mounted the table latch so we could connect our two pieces in the middle. Pulls it in nice and tight.

Last we wanted a way to show some advertising on the bottom of our tables so we used the Spontan magnet boards, mounted with chain and I hook screws. Our signs are inexpensive magnet signs. They stick great to the metal IKEA magnet board.

Anyone that has a little imagination can incorporate many IKEA items into designing a custom display booth for a trade show.

I know it shows a brand but hard to give a trade show booth hack that’s generic. I am sure others could be inspired. I actually have a painting company I am helping to create a booth for with similar supplies.

Displaying figures using Ribba By: Little Plastic Man

Displaying figures using Ribba Star Wars figures or any figures

Materials: 1 Ribba Frame, Hard Cardboard, lots of paper clips

This is a hack of the RIBBA picture frame to use it display toy like Star Wars figures.

Using the paper clips to form holders for the figures.

Bend paper clip as shown in the picture and insert from the back of the hard board to form holders for the figure.

Poke the paper clip through the board from the backside of the board.

You will most likely have to create a hole first. In this instance, I used a nail.

This will create a holder for your figures.

Enforce the paper clips with masking tape at the back
