Hackers Help: Turning Erikslund into picture frame? By: Mike

Hi all

I bought an Erikslund picture recently, which has exactly the right dimensions to frame a painting I already have.

I have undone the staples to remove the back, and removed the glue keeping the glass in place, and replaced it with a custom-cut pane of clear PVA.

The problem I have is that the inside of the frame, which was hidden due to the frosted glass, now shows through since I am mounting my painting at the back of the frame (deep-mounted) – and it is untreated, while the rest of the frame which was always visible, is black.

So what paint should I use to make the frame more uniform? Any old black wood paint from my local hardware? Spray paint?

Any ideas please?

IKEA Closet Doors into Workstation with Monitor Hutch By: Mike

Materials: 1 Linnmon tabletop, 4 Besta Tofta doors, 5 adjustable table legs, 8 Capita 4″ legs

1. I started off by cutting the 3 of the 4 Besta Tofta doors long ways down the middle using a circular saw with a melamine blade. This created 6 strips, each 10″ wide by 75.5″ long.

2. took the 1 door I didn’t cut fastened it to the Linnmon table top using PL and screws. This created the desks work area. I added 4 adjustable table legs also from Ikea to each corner. There was an issue with the desk bowing in the center after it was upright so I decided to add another leg in the center. I set it far enough to the back that it was not noticeable when you sat down.

3. I used one of the strips of from the doors I cut for the shelf where I would place my monitors. I used 8 capita 4″ stainless steel legs to give me the desired height. I then glued a strip of PVC molding I got from home depot to the front of the shelf so it better matched the desk portion. After that I added an LED light strip underneath. The LEDs were purchased from Amazon.

4. I then used the remaining strips of closet doors to build the hutch or monitor housing. It is completely separate from the desk. After it was built I fastened it to the desk with a few screws.

5. I then used a sheet of 1/8″ melamine coated fiberboard from home depot for the hutch’s back panel. Once it was tacked on the whole thing became rigid.

That’s pretty much it.

Table lamp to ceiling lamp By: MIke

Materials: GRONO lamp, cord with lamp socket

I needed an affordable ceiling lamp, and I liked the look of the GRONO frosted square table lamps – they are about 4″ square by 10″ tall. They came with a small size socket and low watt bulb with a roller plug on the cord – el cheapo style. I think they cost about $5 or $6 each. For about $3 I got a plug with a standard size socket and replaced the original plug and socket. I cut off the plug end and hard-wired it to the house current. I made small square bases with a little lip out of Baltic birch plywood, and wall-ah! Ceiling lamp! This was in 2007. I don’t know if they still sell these lamps.

Solfint Ribba By: Mike

Materials: RIBBA frame, SOLFINT straws

For some cheap, quick and bright ‘art’, take one pack of Solfint drinking straws and put them inside a 25cmx25cm Ribba frame. No cutting required.

You need to put in three layers, (you’ll still have some straws left over) and it works best if you alternate the direction of layers. Put your first layer in, the one that will be on display, with the straws going up/down, the second layer with them going left/right, the final layer with them going up/down.

You could also use the Sommarfint straws.
