Ikea furniture assembly making a secret play room By: Jules IKEAHacker

2013-07-26 14.30.59_1000-792083

Materials: Kura, Malm, Expedit, Drona, Mammut, formica board

Description: What we want:

- make more place in my son’s room

- offer him a secret play room

How we do:

Firstly, we look for several pieces of furniture whose dimensions allow them to go under a Kura bed. Malm chests with 3 and 2 drawers (for clothes) and Expedit shelf (for toys) are selected.

Secondly, we assemble these pieces of furniture in this order :

1/ Kura assembly. Remark: one formica board replaces an original small wooden board (cf. photos)

2/ 2 Malm assembly and installation under the Kura

3/ Expedit assembly. Installation under the Kura: several extra battens (in the right dimensions) are necessary to support the Expedit, to make it stay upright (cf. photos). Remark: the Expedit dimensions are EXACTLY the space under the Kura, so to put it into this space, you have to go slowly with patience. The Drona fabric boxes are added for containing toys.

After the 2 Malm arrangement, the space behind them is big enough to form the secret play room for my son. This secret play room has a window which is the formica board in the Kura assembly. In order for him not to lean on the back of the Malm chest, we have added a without legs Mammut chair (cf. photos).

PANNÅ place mat as a modern wall art By: Jules IKEAHacker

lak4uj-720995

Materials: PANNÅ place mat, glue

Description: This is a very easy hack but can decorate even a big wall.

Step 1 – buy the right number of PANNÅ place mat and choose the color witch suits your room.

Step 2 – put rapid dry glue (I used aquarium silicone) onto the back of the mats.

Step 3 – place them one by one. That’s it :)

Hack a Ceiling Track for Shower Curtain By: Jules IKEAHacker

AFTER_curtaintrack-703105

Materials: One pack (24 pieces) IKEA Dignitet hook & clamp, 12 pieces IKEA stainless steel cabinet escutcheon 15cm x 2.5cm, aluminum i-beam ceiling track (2 meter length), 12 roller hooks for i-beam track, 3 screw-mounts to attach i-beam track to ceiling, shower curtain and clear-plastic curtain rings

Description: The old shower curtain rod (see the BEFORE photo) in my little 2m x 2m bathroom ran across the middle of the room and made it FEEL even smaller! It was too tempting to hang towels on the rod adding to the visual clutter. Plus, being over 2m tall, I always had to duck down getting in and out which was a pain.

The solution was to buy a two meter length of aluminum I-beam curtain track and mount that to the ceiling. It’s very flexible so I curved the ends in toward the shower stall to help keep water from leaking around the sides of the curtain.

To bring the shower curtain down so that its bottom edge was inside the tub, I needed some extended hangers. Lots of ways to do that. I used 12 IKEA Dignitet curtain hangers — they have a hook on one end and a strong spring clamp on the other end — to attach the 15cm IKEA stainless steel escutcheons to the original clear-plastic curtain rings. The IKEA escutcheons were actually designed for IKEA kitchen cabinets and drawers. They were the perfect length for my project and they already had holes drilled at each end where I was able to attach the hooks. And being stainless steel they won’t rust!

It’s amazing how this small change makes the tiny room feel open and bigger.

Light up Pax By: Jules IKEAHacker

1-doorlight-744997

Materials: Pax Fevik wardrobe door, Glänsa light chain

Description: I had seen this hack and thought it looked really cool.

Fortunately I stumbled upon a Pax Fevik door in the bargain corner, a bit big at 2.35 m but at a really good price. I got a Glänsa light chain, 8 m and 144 lights to turn the door into a lamp.

2-doorlight-748462

Got home and tested out how to fit the long chain in the door and decided go with vertical lengths. I used some steel wire and the bottom to keep it straight and close to the glass, and some cable clips at the top.

The tinted glass gives a nice cozy light in the room and I am super satisfied!

His Own Little Chair By: Littlemoments

redchair

Materials: AGEN

Description: I’ve been looking for a little chair for Nolan for a while. I wanted him to have a little spot that was all his own (granted he’s currently always on the move and the idea of him sitting still is more a dream than a reality). But, I have to think that at some point he’ll want to sit down for at least a moment. During a trip to Ikea I noticed the AGEN children’s chair.

The price was right and the shape was cute, but it needed a little personality. So off to work I went, I applied three thin coats of red spray paint. Once fully dry, I brought it back inside and lined the chair with an inexpensive faux sheepskin (also purchased at Ikea a while back). The faux sheepskin definitely makes the seat more comfortable for our little guy and is machine washable so it should stand up over time. Nolan seems happy with his new little seat. It makes me picture him as a toddler, sitting, eating Cheerios and watching cartoons. Did I mention how much I love him? His little face instantly makes me smile. His new thing at the moment is patting my cheek and giving me a look that makes me melt.

Klubbo Turns Lovely Peony Printed Ottoman By: Brittany Zeller-Holland

Klubbo-Ottoman

Supplies: 2 yds of upholstery fabric, 4in foam cut to coffee table size, 8 yds 5/32″ welt cord, hi-loft batting, coordinating thread, spray adhesive, staple gun, staples, yardstick or t-square, pins, scissors and sewing machine.

Klubbo-Ottoman-Supplies

Description: First I took off the legs on the Ikea Klubbo and used spray adhesive to stick 4 inch thick foam onto the top. The lady at the cutting counter at JoAnns was super nice and cut it right to the size I needed! Then put the batting over the foam to cut it to size. Staple that down at the bottom of the sides.

Then I cut out the fabric pieces for the top and sides and created the cording. I got by without changing the foot on my sewing machine, but I’m sure a welt cording foot would make it a bit easier! After completing the cover I slipped it over the foam covered coffee table stapled the fabric to the bottom of the table while flipped over.
