Minidron: cute telecontrol Robot By: Jules Yap

Materials: Vessla box

Description: I wanted to build a real working robot. Not one of those tiny, fragile, experimental but one with a good size.

Vessla box is perfect for the robot body, as it is solid enough and comes with wheels.

I hope you like this techie hacking!

See step-by-step instructions of the Vessla robot.

Watch out for our new look tomorrow! By: Jules Yap

Tomorrow, 8 September, is the day.

IKEAHackers.net will undergo a long overdue site redesign, which I mentioned here. What is most significant about the redesign is that I am moving off the Blogger platform to Wordpress. Fingers crossed that the site won't be down too long, as I point the domain to the new hosting account. I hope the transition will be a smooth one and we can be up and hacking in no time.

The redesign has taken a lot longer than I expected with some complications arising from the transfer of images from Blogger to Wordpress. A whole bunch of them, especially for the older posts, went missing. I am in the midst of reuploading the missing files, so if you do come across some of them, do bear with me for yet a little while longer. I hope to clean everything up before the mid of this month.

I am excited and look forward to doing more for the site on Wordpress. Once again, thanks for your support and come back tomorrow for a brand new IKEAHackers.

Rolling Expedit clothes display By: Jules Yap

Materials: Expedit tv storage unit

Description: I turned this Expedit tv unit into a clothing store display wall that opens like a door.

The store owner didn't get my vision at first but after it was up and running, much praise.

I first assembled the unit being cautious to glue the dowels to avoid sagging. screwed 90lb max capacity castors to the four corners of the right side, witch later would become the bottom.

I used a piano hinge to attach the, now roll-able unit to a metal stud . A word of caution, There is not a lot of meat to screw into along the bottom edge of the unit(3/4 of an inch)from the face, so be careful.

Hacker help: What is this rail called?? By: Jules Yap

Materials: ?

Description: Hi all.

I was wondering what the cord rail in this photo is called. This picture is from one of IKEA's promotional pieces. The rail I'm talking about is the one where all the photos and that pink mask are hanging off of. Thanks.

Hacker help: "Little" loft bed - does it work? By: Jules Yap

Materials: 1x Sniglar junior bed, 2x Laiva desk

Description: We have a Sniglar junior bed. Now I'm searching for a way to make it higher. My daughter is 2 years old, so I guess a solution with a "little" cave is enough.

Laiva desk and Sniglar Bed are both 70cm wide. Is it possible to use 2 desks as high legs? How to fix them? Shall I cut of the legs of Sniglar or is there another solution? As possible I wanna use the desks and the bed later again separate...

Fake old library By: Jules Yap

Materials: Billy, Benno, Lack

Description: We wanted to create an old style library, with CD storage ...

To create this kind of library, we used :

2 Billy

2 Benno

2 Lack shelves

furniture feet

cornices, mouldings ...

We started to put classic furniture feet under a Lack shelf (for the base of the library).

We fixed Billy and Benno to the Lack shelf and together.

We put the second Lack shelf on the top of the library.

We used little wooden mouldings between Billy and Benno, and polystyrene cornices on the top of library.

We put wallpaper in Billy (like an old wardrobe).

And finally, we painted everything to create a vintage style.

Now, we are very glad to have this unique library less expensive than an real old furniture !

Full Height, Wall-to-Wall Sliding Bypass Doors Using HASVIK Panels By: Jules Yap

Materials: Two sets of Ikea HASVIK Sliding Doors, Two sets of Everbilt 60 in. Sliding Door Sets from Home Depot, Vinyl Tubing, 2x4, Two 3" long bolts and nylock nuts

Description: Needed sliding doors for full height, wall-to-wall closet with opening dimension of 116x95" on a budget. Home Depot and Lowes did not carry off-the-shelf door panels that would fit that opening without going custom order. Two sets of 59x92 7/8" HASVIK sliding doors was the most economical solution.

Also, two sets of Everbilt 60 inch sliding door sets were used. The door panels were slightly short so a 2x4 was used as a spacer to bring the track lower.

None of the hardware that came with the Ikea doors were used. It would have taken too long to modify. Home Depot had sliding door hardware priced right.

To prevent the sliding doors from going all the way to the left or right, two bolts with Nylock nuts and vinyl tubing were installed through the tracks as a stop.

Hacker Help: Un-hacking a Lack? By: Jules Yap

Materials: Lack

Description: I currently have two sets of Lack side tables stacked on top of each other and glued together that serve as storage, one on each side of my TV cabinet. It's worked OK for the past year, but I want to upgrade it to something that looks just a bit nicer. I was able to get another pair of Lack side tables (so I now have a total of 6) of Craigslist for cheap but they're in a different color.

Ideally, what I'd like to do is have something I'd like to do is have the same basic thing but have it so that each Lack-stack is sitting on the third Lack tabletop (so it would be top, legs, top, legs, top). The problem is that the I (a) want to keep the red and (b) would be really bothered by the black of the new Lack tables just being at the bottom.

So is there a way for me to un-glue the Lack stacks I have now without damaging them too badly so that I can put the red tabletops on the top and the bottom and the black ones in the middle? If not I can just repaint or decoupage all the shelves but I'd rather not.
