12 Vegan and Vegetarian Thanksgiving Recipes By: Grace Bonney

When the holidays roll around, it can be difficult to find ways to make sure everyone at your table has something delicious (and safe) for them to eat. I have a large group of friends that don’t eat meat or animal products of any kind, and my sister-in-law has over 20 food allergies that require serious consideration when cooking. Julia has always been so wonderfully inclusive of our friends’ and family’s food requirements and preferences that it’s made me want to work harder to find delicious things that suit a wide range of diets and make everyone feel welcome at the table. The holidays are all about bringing people together to celebrate and hopefully these recipes will kickstart some new family traditions that celebrate all of the different (and delicious) things you can make without meat, dairy and animal products. I think these recipes are all incredibly flavorful and will be something everyone enjoys, regardless of dietary preference or requirement. xo, grace

Rustic Apple Pie Recipe from Katie Lee By: Grace Bonney

The very first season of Top Chef holds a special place in my heart. It’s what inspired me to start cooking in earnest and it made me much more aware of all of the hard work that happens behind closed doors to bring food to our tables when we dine out. Season one featured my favorite Top Chef “cheftestant” of all time, Harold Dieterle, and it also introduced me to Katie Lee. A fellow southerner, Katie was born in West Virginia and eventually moved north to New York where she worked in restaurants and became a professional fishmonger. Since her days in the back of the house, Katie has gone on to work as a co-host of The Kitchen on Food Network and write her own cookbook dedicated to comfort foods, The Comfort Table: Recipes for Everyday Occasions . Today she’s sharing a recipe with us that is perfect for the upcoming holidays: a free-form apple pie. Known also as a crostata, this pie has a rustic elegance to it that embraces imperfection and makes your life a little easier if you’re trying this for the first time. Headboard in entrance By: Matteo

Hello everyone,

I present to you my first simple hack.

After extensive research in a variety of furniture , I realized that the solution to my long and narrow entrance had to build!!!

And here it is:

First I cut off the cutting board into two pieces as wide as the wall and then attached with silicone.

Then I attached the headboard to the wall with two bolts.

Then, set the six knobs and hinges with mirror.

The space behind the mirror is for keys, gloves etc ….

I am very happy with the result.

GORM Coat rack By: Jonathan Cousineau

Materials: 2x GORM shelves

I made two GORM shelving units into 1 very nice entryway coat rack and and shoe holder. The base construction was only slightly modified by shifting the front legs to the side for a more open shelf. Then I used the second set of GORM shelves to complete the sides and back. Onto the back I attached 5 hooks. Finally I used some scrap pine I had to make caps for the shelves to make it more presentable.

Ribba goes drying By: Heidi Luck

Materials: RIBBA frame

I damaged the Ribba frame and it was not in a condition to be hung from the wall anymore so I decided to turn it into a “drying frame”. I cut the door mat to fit into the frame and supported it from the bottom with the piece of plywood. I also added a rubber feet underneath it so the frame does not get wet. It works perfectly with the saucepans and for. ex. mugs. Looks pretty minimalist and simple too.

I love Thanksgiving, and I am really looking forward to spending it with my family. My parents own a restaurant and growing up we always had a big dinner after the last of the restaurant diners had finished. A lot of the time we had waitstaff join us, along with friends of my parents. My Mom always sets a beautiful table with vintage linens and beautiful china.

I love the idea of updating vintage linens with shibori for a modern Thanksgiving table. I have a collection of old linens, but if you don’t, they’re easy and affordable to find on eBay. Now let’s get dyeing! -Rebecca Atwood

Hall cabinet with high gloss panel By: Przemek

Cabinet in the hallway made through a combination of high gloss kitchen panel, shelf, shoe cabinet, furniture legs (you can use legs from kitchen cabinets), brackets and custom hangers.

We used cabinet with three compartments for shoes that was cut because the original cabinet with two compartments has cutouts for skirting board. On the right side of cabinet there is a place for longer coats. The cabinet is attached to a wall for stability. Panel has a hole for the tablet (home automation).

High-top Gerton Slab Kitchen Island By: Conor

Materials: Bestå Castors, Gerton Table Top, Lack TV Unit

After looking all over the place for a kitchen island that would meet the needs of our new, open (but smaller) kitchen, we decided to hack it with Ikea. We wanted something multi-functional that could operate as a dining table, prep table, shelf, stool storage, and bar top all at the same time. VOILA! Here is our handsome new kitchen Frankenstein!

We used 4 Lack TV Units ($15/each), the largest Gerton Table Top ($80), and 8 of the Bestå system castors (2 for $13/each).

We stacked the Lack units 2×2 to form the base shelves, and secured using some adhesive and nails with small black aluminum plates purchased from a local hardware store. We went with 2 of these small plates at each corner, nailed into the Lack legs. You could use a more robust steel plate support, but this feels pretty sturdy and really disappears from a couple of feet away.

Next, we drilled out (1/4″) the bottoms of the Lack legs to fit out the Bestå castors. These lock too, they’re great.

Finally, we aligned the Gerton table top with both shelves, leaving a 3″ margin around, to maximize the span and give the top a floating appearance. This was secured with 3 steel L brackets from the hardware store on each side.

It works great, and rolls around nicely. The final dimensions are 67″L x 35.5″D x 41″H. We may add some wire cross-bracing to secure it a little further, but want it to appear as minimal and open as possible.
