Materials: RIBBA frame, SOLFINT straws

For some cheap, quick and bright ‘art’, take one pack of Solfint drinking straws and put them inside a 25cmx25cm Ribba frame. No cutting required.

You need to put in three layers, (you’ll still have some straws left over) and it works best if you alternate the direction of layers. Put your first layer in, the one that will be on display, with the straws going up/down, the second layer with them going left/right, the final layer with them going up/down.

You could also use the Sommarfint straws.

This project has graced my kitchen table for the past week and a half…brining a smile to my face every time I see it.

I am totally into a couple emerging decor trends that converged to create this masterpiece. Bring on the gold and bring on the hexagon, or honeycomb, patterns!

I fell head over heals for gold-leafing on glass for holiday decorating with vases, candles, and ornaments. I loved it so much, I used the technique to dress up a plain glass end table top.

Now, I am kicking it up another notch and showing you how to create gold leaf patterns on glass. Imagine the possibilities!

Turn Expedit into Vintage Looking TV Sideboard By: Ilona

Materials: Expedit bookcase, thin ply board, 2 door knobs, 4 second hand furniture legs, paint

White Expedit was painted in green (2 coats after sanding and 1 coat of primer). We removed 2 section shelves and added two doors on the sides. We used thin ply board to cover the back of Expedit. The finishing touch was second hand wooden legs and colorful door knobs. We use it as a TV sideboard, but now it’s called “the soul of the flat”!

When old meets modern By: Anna

Materials: BRAKIG shelf, LOTS mirror

I needed an entry furniture for my house.

As soon as I saw in an IKEA store the BRAKIG shelf (limited edition) I realized that this was the solution.

The pastel color of the BRAKIG units fits perfecly with the colour of my walls.

I decided to stick wooden pieces with a strong glue along the outer edge of the furniture.

I also added a mirror and a door to close one of the units.

Blackboard for IKEA EXPEDIT By: ducksandtigers

The idea:

A blackboard blind for my EXPEDIT shelving unit.

The material:

• Wooden strips for the frame (2cm x 1cm x 33,5cm)


• Board (34,5cm x 34,5cm); I used 2 boards at 34,5cm x 17,25cm


• Glue


• Blackboardpaint

The Tools:

• Saw (even better: miter saw)


• Clamps


• Sandpaper or file


• Paintbrush

Instructions:

1. Build a frame matching the IKEA EXPEDIT shelf.


2. Glue the board(s) on the frame. The board has to be slightly larger than your frame.


3. Paint the board with the blackboardpaint. Usually you’ll need two or three coats. Use sandpaper to smooth the final coat.


4. Use your new blackboard blind on your IKEA EXPEDIT shelving unit.

LERBERG² industrial sideboard By: Florian

Few months ago I bought 2 Lerberg CD/DVD shelves. They ended being useless, since I don’t use the obsolete plastic discs anymore…

What to do now with those shelves?

Two Lerberg CD/DVD shelves + Oak floorboards = a perfect sideboard in a corridor!

You will need:

-2 IKEA Lerberg CD/DVD shelves

-8 wood floorboards (70mm wide)

-8 threaded spindles (diameter 6mm)

-few meters of wood wedge

-drill, saw, glue, clamps…

Lerberg shelves are very sturdy and their shape is a good basis to build anything possible. Here I use them as legs supporting the oak (solid) shelves.

Each Lerberg shelf has originally four threaded holes, used to hang them on a wall so I decided to take profit of those holes with threaded spindles, in order to keep the 2 elements distant from each other, thus making a standing structure.

It’s quite tricky to find the right length for the spindles since they have to match the length of the floorboards plus some extra length to allow it to screw into the threaded holes of the 2 lerberg shelves… Once you find the right distance between the two units, you get the main structure of the sideboard. Also, don’t forget that you need to drill extra holes to insert more spindles. I used tape to locate precisely the position of the spindle.

Side effect is, the furniture has no screw at all

For the shelves, I was lucky enough to find the perfect width of floorboard : 70mm. After applying some coating, I assembled the different elements on the metal structure like this :

Glue is not compulsory but highly recommended

To improve the stability of the furniture, you can use cable bracing against its back. Here is a trick, cost is near zero :

Use thin metallic cable and a common sugar you would use normally for electricity. You just need to strip the plastic case around the metal core!

Here is the final result :

Solid oak marries perfectly with the anthracite color of the Lerberg shelf!
