Kitty window lounger By: Pam Allen

Materials: 2 x HAMPEN Rug high pile, 2 x LACK Side tables, LACK Coffee Table

Given that my lounge room furniture (tv table, side table, bench table and shelves) was all IKEA I decided that when the time came and I needed a kitty window seat for my two new rescue kitties it had to blend in.

At the time I had a LACK Coffee table sitting in my dining room which didn’t quite fit with the lounge room so wondered if I could reuse it in my plans. A simple solution would have been just to cover it ‘as is’ but where is the fun in that!

I also knew that I needed a bit more height and had seen previous hacks using the cheap but extremely versatile LACK Side tables which are the same height as the coffee table. A plan was formulating.

First up was moving the magazine shelf position on the coffee table lower so that it matched the level of the window sill as well as giving the kitties more room. The plan also included extending the lower shelf to provide a sun deck using the shelf, an extension and window sill so the Rug used to cover this level was measured to include the overhang and glued in place onto the shelf before refitting.

With the shelf lowered I attached the first Side table to the Coffee table using flat metal brackets and multipurpose button head screws. One bracket per set of legs and one centrally placed under the two tables. The second Coffee table was placed on top of the first so that the leftover carpet could be measured, including the legs to the second table and cut. The carpet was then fitted and glued in place to this level.

Before fitting the second Coffee table I made two scratching posts out of cardboard tubing and sisal rope the same height as the Side table legs and slipped these onto the back legs of the top Side table. The second Side table was then attached on top of the first Side table using square metal brackets and screws. The second Coffee table was then covered in the rug and screwed discretely in place.

As the kitty lounger would be resting against the end of my lounge I also added a backing on it using a thin MDF board and leftover rug and carpet so that any scratching would not be my lounge.

Two cat beds finished the project off nicely.

DIY Card Catalog / Apothecary from RAST for $75 By: Chris

Materials: RAST dresser

Shirley is very nostalgic for library card catalogs so we decided to make a card catalog. We settled on using a RAST dresser because of its hackability.

We added the following items to the basic RAST:

1) plywood faux drawer fronts

2) thin (3/4″) screen moulding to simulate a face frame cabinet look for the card catalog

3) label handle/hardware and knobs

4) stain and sealer

The plywood drawer fronts and screen moulding were glued onto the RAST drawers and clamped. See pictures 2 and 3 for their arrangement.

We were pleased to complete the project for about $75 (or $40 in addition to the RAST dresser).

Easel to Magnetic Board + Whiteboard Combo By: Derrick

Materials: Algot metal shelves, Dokument pen cups, Mala easel, SLÄTTHULT wall stickers

Had a Mala easel which I had no space to open up and use since moving into my new apartment. After browsing around here for some ideas, decided to disassemble it to make it into a magnetic+whiteboard combo for my daughter’s bedroom.

Steps:

1- Took apart the Mala easel by removing the pen tray and unscrew the hinges at the top

2- Cover up the whiteboard and blackboard with newspapers then painted the wooden frame with the spare pink paint that was used to paint my daughter’s bedroom walls

3- Used 3M double-side tape (those outdoor type with the red peel off backing) to mount the Algot shelves as the magnetic board onto the blackboard portion

4- Decorated the magnetic board with the wall stickers

5- Screwed the Dokument pen cups to the right side of the exposed blackboard

6- Stuck the boards against the bedroom wall with 3M Command stickers at the top (used 3M Command stickers so that it can be removed in future without damaging the wall)

Done!

You just pile them up !

You may want to consolidate your structure with glue. I did not in order to rearrange them differently in the future.

From dresser to bed drawers By: Ronja Lotte

Recycle your old Leksvik dresser and make some new under bed drawers for your bedroom.

1. First, I pulled out the two large drawers of my dresser and measured whether these would fit under my bed. Unfortunately, the larger one of the two was too high, so I had to unpack my circular saw. First I sawed off about 2,4 inches from the top of the drawer…

2. … and then I glued this part of the bigger drawer on top of the second drawer. I did this to adjust the height of the smaller drawer so that both of them would look the same height. Then I unscrewed the handles on the drawers and painted both drawers white.

3. Now I only had to paint the handles light gray and screw them back on. At last I glued felt to the bottom of the drawers so that I can pull them out without scratching my floor and then I was finally able to fill my new my bed drawers! Yay!

STUVA desk with BESTA doors By: Cathy

Seeing the STUVA desk that was just posted inspired me to send in the desk that I built last year. I wanted a new desk that would have plenty of storage space, without costing too much. The depth of the STUVA cabinets was perfect to hold my printers, etc. out of sight, but I did not like the available doors in that line and the BESTA doors are less expensive. It turns out that the BESTA doors fit perfectly onto the STUVA frame (with the obvious exception of the drawer fronts).

For desk drawers, I used the STUVA wire baskets with a STODJA flatware tray. For the cabinet with my electronics, I left the back panel off to provide adequate ventilation and to feed power cords in through the back. I used a LINNMON table top as the surface of my desk. I have the desk top sitting on top of the STUVA units (with gripping pads to avoid sliding) and the upper STUVA unit sitting on top of the desk top (with felt pads to avoid scratching). It is very sturdy (and makes it easier to move for cleaning), but if I had kids, I would probably attach the pieces together using the appropriate brackets.

DIY Copper Drawer Pulls update an IKEA Dresser By: Anna-Mack Severn

Materials: They don’t sell ours anymore but its VERY similar to the MALM dresser

When we bought our gray distressed IKEA dresser we loved the finish, and the soft close doors. However the overall picture was pretty bland. Since we have a sort of modern farmhouse feel we wanted to make the dresser really fit that.

Initially we wanted to create leather pulls but after a terrible online buying experience we switched over to copper!

We purchased copper bell hangers and caps from www.zoro.com. We then purchased the actual pipe and a clear enamel spray at Home Depot!

First we installed the copper bell hangers about 12″ apart on each drawer. We exchanged the screws that came with the bell hangers for nuts/bolts that we could attach more hardily.

Next we cut the copper pipe using a simple pipe cutter tool to six 15″ pieces. We glued the caps on and then sprayed with clear enamel to maintain a shiny copper finish. Ultimately we also cleaned each pull up with Bar Keepers Friend to get it nice and sparkly!

Finally we screwed the pulls into the bell hangers and were done. I love how it gives the dresser a little bit of sparkle and seems industrial all at the same time!

IKEA bench seat with lots of storage By: Vivian

Materials: 2 Alex Drawer Units and 1 Double and 1 Single BESTA shelf unit with Vassbo door

IKEA came to the rescue for us recently when we were looking to add more storage to our son’s bedroom to store his toys and schoolwork. Rather than simply add a whole lot of cabinetry we decided to double the space as a seating area for him to read a book, play his instruments etc.

The cabinets consist of two Alex drawer units flanking a double and single BESTA shelf unit with Vassbo door panels. After building all the pieces, my husband fixed the bottom cabinets together with screws so that they stay in place. The cabinets are not as deep as the drawer units and I wanted all units to be flush, so he had a piece of thick MDF cut to similar depth to the drawer units and fixed it to the top of the base cabinets with screws.

We chose not to fit skirting boards because it would have made the entire configuration higher and the current height is perfect for a child. I had custom upholstered seat cushions made to create a comfortable seating space and we are pretty happy with the results.
