DIY a Mercury Glass Lamp with a Custom Fabric Shade for Less than $52 By: Barbara Miller

Materials: IKEA Bran lamp base and 1 IKEA Hemsta lamp shade

I needed to find a simple glass base that has an opening large enough to allow me to paint inside and a lamp shade frame. I decided to use all IKEA for these pieces because even though you can get a lamp shade at any thrift store and remove the old fabric to get to a frame, not all of those shades fit an IKEA base. (IKEA does that on purpose and let’s face it – it’s annoying)

I wanted to create a unique lamp shade that required no high level DIY skills, if you build a sleek lamp shade any imperfection will show so why not design something that celebrates those imperfections as part of the artistic process!

Watch the video first, these instructions are meant to help you remember the order or answer any additional question:

Remove the base from the box but save it to use in the painting process

Tape the cord that is extending from the base and anything else you want to protect from paint spray

Clean the inside of the lamp and let dry (409 or similar is fine)

Invert the base inside the box so the opening on the bottom is facing up – stand up the box to support the base during painting

Using MANY, MANY light coats cover the inside with the looking glass paint, any imperfections add to the antiqued look

Tear fabric into 2-3 inch strips

Wrap the end of the first strip around the bottom of the shade and stitch it in place by hand

Wrap the strip over the top and back down until you reach the end, sew to the top or bottom rail and start a new strip in the same place

Continue this wrapping, overlapping each piece by at least 1/2 an inch until you get back to where you started and stitch this end in the same way as you started

Make sure you stitch neatly as the inside of the lampshade will be visible

When the base is dry put the base and top together and light it up!

KOLDBY Cowhide Rug to Cool Chrome Chair By: Heathered Nest

This hack used an Ikea KOLDBY rug to re-upholster a vintage mid-century modern chair. The old upholstered cushion served as a template, and the rug was simply cut to that shape with regular fabric shears/scissors. A pneumatic stapler was used to adhere the cowhide to the chair frame. The best part is that I still have tons of the KOLDBY left to use for other projects!

IKEA chip clips to the rescue By: Steph

Materials: Bevara Kitchen Storage Sealing Chip Clips

With two toddlers, mealtime can be extremely messy. They’re too old for bibs, but they need something to protect their clothes when eating soup, yogurt, etc. Enter the IKEA chip clips. Grab a tea towel (the IKEA ones actually do work best – perfect size and thickness), a large clip, and voila – you’ve got a neck-all-the-way-down-to-the-ankles protector. Grab a smaller clip and keep long pigtails from falling into the food – they are so great for this as even very fine hair doesn’t get stuck in the clips since there’s no hinge!

I could go on and on – we use these clips for everything (my son loves using them as chopsticks), but these two in particular are so useful every day.

Girly – Billy Shoe Closet By: MagCarco

Materials: 3 Billy 40 cm wide

I have this very nice closet in my hallway, I thought it would be just perfect for my shoes (I love shoes) when we bought the apartment. I searched a while on the net to find ideas to upgrade it, and i was on my way to buy 122 cm wide cut-to-measure shelves to complete my storage when I realized that 3 x 40 cm = 120 cm = 3 IKEA famous Billy!

I bought a nice wall paper (chosen by my 7 years old princess), some nice wood-molding, already painted. I put the wall paper on the back of the book case, which was trickier than I thought. I fitted all 3 Billy fixed together in the closet and fixed the frame to hide the space between the bookcases and the closet wall, and fixed one between bookcases, to hide the line.

I put the shelves with the front lower, to display the shoes nicely, and added a little molding in the front so the shoes did not slide et voilà !

STUVA Desk Hack with faux concrete tabletop By: Jill

Materials: STUVA cabinets and legs, doors

We just added a little over 300 square feet to our house, which included a home office! We needed to furnish the room, and I loved the idea of a wall to wall desk. Finding an affordable option was difficult though. I’ve always loved the modern look of the STUVA cabinets, and I love that they are meant for kids (which means they are sturdy and have hinges great for little fingers!) I thought they’d look perfect in my modern/industrial looking office space!

I bought three STUVA base cabinets with doors and the 12 IKEA legs for the base. I assembled the pieces as Ikea suggested. The only difference was that I used the white legs with the grey bases that came with the cabinets, rather than the colored bases that came with the legs. Then I made a faux concrete tabletop to place a top it.

I started with a 3/4 inch 8 ft board of plywood that I had the hardware store cut it so that it was 21.5 inches deep. I used a jigsaw to cut out holes for cords. Then I used feather finish to cover the plywood, giving it a concrete tabletop look. I placed it atop the STUVA bases.

A Kansas Home Filled with Color and Pattern By: Grace Bonney

Every once in a while, people luck out and find their dream home on the first try. Other times, it takes years to find the perfect space. For Tobe and Eric Reed, they had to look at over 200 homes until they found one that was just right. Convinced that they originally wanted a fixer-upper, the Reeds spent a long time looking for the perfect makeover project. But after three failed offer attempts, they expanded their search to see more move-in-ready homes. The home they would eventually call their own was outside of their budget range during the majority of their search process, but as luck would have it, it fell into their range toward the end of their hunt.

Eric and Tobe loved the home’s mid-century character and the fact that it was centrally located in their hometown of Overland Park, KS (the couple works on opposite ends of the city). So three years ago they moved in and they’ve worked on making it feel like their home ever since. Tobe, a blogger, shop owner and graphic design/social media manager for Hallmark Cards and Eric, a Fire Protection Engineer, share their home with their daughters Ava and Grace and a rescue cat named Tucker. Their family has worked together to create a space that not only welcomes their friends and family, but makes each member of their family feel comforted and at home. I love all of the family pieces they’ve incorporated into their space, along with cherished artwork by friends. Tobe explained, “It’s so important to love where you live, and we’ve taken great care to surround ourselves with things that we love and that serve our lifestyle. While I may never be content to just leave things alone for awhile (or even five minutes), I think it comes from a need to move and shift to best reflect the people that live here and how we need our home to function.” I think they’ve done just that and I’m so thrilled to peek inside their beautiful home today. xo, grace

BESTA Dog Sanctuary By: Jane in Boston

Our dog, Maggie has always slept in a dog crate in our bedroom. After recently moving into a new home, we saw that the old, worn-out crate was taking up too much room, and decided that it was time for a new solution.

Maggie likes the comfort and security of a crate, and has always refused to use only a pillow or dog bed. We had been using this BESTA television stand as an end table and to store blankets, but realized that with a few changes, it could be put to better use as a fancy customized dog sanctuary.

I used the BESTA TV unit (which we had originally bought with the optional steel, chrome-plated underframe), and removed the center shelf and pegs.

I then made two separate curtains to give the pup a little privacy, but allow her to get in and out of her bed easily. For these I used a woven-cotton fabric, backed with muslin. I cut the fabric to cover the open front of the BESTA, then assembled the pieces with my sewing machine. I also sewed two strips of Velcro to the tops of each curtain, and adhered the Velcro’s opposite side to the front edge of the unit (this was the peel-and-stick type Velcro). This allows the curtains to be easily removed for washing.

For the bed itself, I bought a cheap faux-sheepskin crate pillow from the pet store down the street. I then sewed a bright red cover that can be easily removed and thrown into the laundry.

As for the pup, she’s really taken to her fancy new sleep sanctuary. It’s cozy and calm for her, and looks stylish in our new bedroom.

Dusen Dusen Home + Aidy Bryant By: Grace Bonney

Sometimes, when two equally wonderful things collide, something even more spectacular results. For me, that is exactly what happened when Dusen Dusen collaborated with SNL cast member Aidy Bryant for the debut of their first home collection.

Designer Ellen Van Dusen’s clothing line, Dusen Dusen, has been a smash hit since its debut in 2010 and now Ellen has teamed up with her friend, buyer Ada Egloff, to create a collection of home goods for fall 2015. The collection continues with Ellen’s trademark style of bold primarily colors brought to life in the form of whimsical patterns and prints. The debut collection includes rugs, pillows, towels, bedding, throws and poufs- all modeled expertly by Aidy and the official canine mascot of Dusen Dusen, Snips the dog. Aidy’s sense of humor is a perfect match for the fun upbeat mood of the collection and I love seeing them all wrapped together. The photoshoot basically looks like my ideal slumber party fun, complete with an adorable dog and funny friends. Dusen Dusen home won’t be in stores until August, but today we’re thrilled to share an exclusive look at the full collection.
