A Home Full of Creativity and DIY Design By: Grace Bonney

Back when I first moved to Brooklyn, one of the first buildings I used to drive by frequently was David Stark’s incredible Carroll Gardens studio. I was a huge fan of David’s work and event design imagination, and it wasn’t until 2010 when I got to know him and his team more closely. Since then I have been a devoted fan of all of their work and their endless creativity. So when we got the chance to peek inside the home of his Special Projects Designer, Corrie Beth Hogg, I was overwhelmed with excitement.

Corrie shares her apartment in Prospect Lefferts Gardens with her boyfriend, artist Ryan Magyar. Originally from South Mississippi, Corrie moved to New York in 2001 where she began making paintings and collages. She has been working with David Stark for the past 11 years and the creativity she and Ryan bring to this space is reflected in every room and in every nuance. I love how many handmade details are in their home, from paper mache trays to paper trees and owls. Each piece in their home has a story, but manages to work together, rather than feeling cluttered. “I am changing things all the time,” Corrie says. “Things are rotating room to room as well. If I find or make something new, I pass along the old piece. I don’t think it will ever be ‘done’ and I don’t want it to be. Change is good (and fun), plus our tastes evolve or we get tired of things. I can’t sit still for long, so I am also always finding places that need a change or a handmade or DIY something.” I so admire her can-do spirit (she watched YouTube videos to learn how to change her own light fixtures) and I am so happy to share it here today. KALLAX + natural wood By: IH guest

Used IKEA item: the “old” KALLAX + desk

How I did it:

Just cut the desk into 4 pieces, so I had 3 + 1 boards

On the left side I drilled two holes to fix the sticks

Started at the bottom to build the new boards, fixed them with two screws at the KALLAX

Kitchen splashback made from TANEM door plus RIBBA boards By: IH guest

Materials: TANEM door

Due to the fact, that the wall behind our sink and cooker was just painted with a normal wallpaint, I was thinking about what we could do to make it a bit nicer plus tomato-sauce resistant…

Here is my solution:

We took a an IKEA TANEM door (from the PAX system) and added two RIBBA picture wall boards… thats all… !

By using the drill holes, which are necessary to mount the RIBBA boards, we fixed the entire structure with long screws to the wall, to the effect that you can’t see any srcew-heads! !

It’s nice, it’s handy, easy to clean and came quite inexpensive!

DIY Upcycled Clock Frame By: Grace Bonney

Since moving into our home, I’ve wanted to fill the walls with photos, quotes and things that hold meaning to my husband and me. It has been a process choosing what to hang, so our walls are pretty bare at the moment. When Fran and Grace contacted me to create a picture frame tutorial, I knew this was the nudge I needed to work towards my goal of printing and hanging memorable photos. This project took longer than I expected due to the time I spent reminiscing over our photos from our honeymoon in Maui, but the DIY process was a breeze. I finally landed on a photo from one of my favorite places we visited and got to work! I love how easy it is to transform a simple clock into a clean, functional frame. I’ll have to rotate the photo every once in a while so I can keep admiring all the treasured family photos I have stored away. —Courtney

Materials Needed:

-Clock

-Printed photo

-Leather strap

-Bronze circular stud

-Xacto knife

-Scissors

-Tape

Process:

1. Take apart your clock.

2. Cut your photo to the size of the inside of the clock.

3. Tape or glue your photo over the original clock numbers.

4. Put your clock back together so it is now a picture frame.

5. Using your x-acto knife, cut two slits through the leather and side of the clock. If your clock is not plastic, you can use a drill.

6. Secure leather to your frame with the circular stud by flattening the prongs on the underside of the frame.

7. Hang up and enjoy!

Auto water feeder for dogs By: IH guest

Materials: SORTERA recycling bin

It’s getting hotter and my dogs needed more water. I thought of making it automatic, so that they can have water even while I am away.

So I bought a float and some small related accessories and then installed in an IKEA SORTERA box (recycling bin with lid). I took half the lid off, which allows the dogs to drink water, most of the leaves to stay out, and the dogs cannot get in. Used white tape to secure the cover. When filled, it is heavy and they cannot move it.

It works fantastic!

After The Jump 2015: Your Requests for Next Season By: Grace Bonney

Last December I took a much-needed break from my weekly radio show to focus on everything related to our move upstate and to focus more on the site here, our team and what we were writing about. But after almost four months away from the radio, I’m ready to put my headphones back on to record season 3 and episode 101. So why am I writing about this now without an episode to share yet? Because I’d really like this season to be shaped by all of YOU.

Rather than last year’s format of interview-after-interview, I’m going to be cobbling together (and editing on my own) slightly longer shows and an overall season that addresses deeper topics in each episode, with interviews, clips and advice from multiple guests around the world. Since we aren’t living just a few minutes away from Roberta’s anymore, I’ll be recording on my own, interviewing guests via phone, Skype and in-person at our home in Ulster County. Each episode will have a more narrative arc and will feel more like a crafted story, which will allow me to better ensure that each episode delivers the sort of high-quality content, advice and feedback that you all deserve.

So I would love to hear from you: what do YOU want to hear on Season 3 of After the Jump? I’m open to everything and anything, from recommendations for guests, to suggestions for the format to overall topics, issues and problems (or things you want to celebrate!) you want to hear addressed. This show is all about celebrating, encouraging and helping the creative community connect and grow, so your thoughts, opinions and feedback mean so much.
