I want to revamp my old and unattractive Ikea lamp, so I used Annie Sloan chalk paint and wax.
I painted with duck egg blue and I used a plastic bag to create “earth looking” finish, when it dried I waxed the entire lamp. Of course I changed the old lampshade with a new one.
That’s it!

I needed a way to display my daughter’s Pez dispenser collection that was simple and easy for her to reach and use. While not exactly a hack, I did use the Grundtal for an unintended purpose.
I mounted the Grundtal bar right about the Ribba and the back lip works great in holding the Pez upright..

We wanted to create a window seat for our four year old girl, so we purchased 2 BESTA bookcases for either side of the window. In order to create the window seat, we added 2 lower cabinets, but they weren’t quite long enough, so we had to create faux panels using the extra shelving. We love it!
Since I was looking for a new neat and tidy server setup I took some measurements of my hardware, went to the local Ikea and started measuring.
I soon found the Micke desk cabinet and figured that I could achieve my goal just by skipping some steps in the build process.
1) When putting in the drawers you can only use the top two points.
measure the height of your equipment and decide if you want one large drawer or two small ones.
2) Don’t insert the back plate when installing the top.
3) I decided to use one large drawer and because I wanted to route some cabling I decided to use the back plate of a small drawer.
Just put the drawer together as normal but when doing the backing plate re-drill the hole attaching the sides to the back plate.
4) Snap or saw one of the spare drawer bottoms in half to create a platform on top of the drawer for a router or other equipment.
5) Use small long screws to hang any light equipment (wifi access-points etc) from the sides, and I found that attatching a power strip to the inside can be done with zipties and drilling a hole in the side for the ziptie to go trough.
Easy and simple, I just customized my old BEKVÄM stool by repainting it and adding rubber surfaces.

How-to:
First you have to decide where to put your stairway to cat heaven.
While your hubby drills the holes according to ikea instructions, you may glue the rug unto the shelves with adhesive tape. The sisal rug Egeby is used for scratching, you can fix it to wall with steel nails.
Much better than any cheap scratching tree and sooo much better looking!
Needed: 4 – Linnmon Table Tops 47 1/4″ x 23 5/8″; 4 – Lack Wall Shelves; 2: 8′ Lamp Cord Kits; 2: Porcelain Key-less Light Fixture; 2: CFL Bulbs (DUH); 2: Wood Veneer; 1: 36″ Dowel; 4 Strips of wood; 2: Power Strips; 2: Light Switches; 2: Wire Nuts; 1: Switch Cover to match; 1: 5′ 1×4; 2: 1/4″x3″x8″ strips of wood; 12: Straight Brackets; Lots of 1″ & 2″ screws; Gorilla Glue; Wood Glue (just in case of any mishaps); 1: White Crayon to mark location for holes; 1: Tube of White Acrylic Paint to Touch up any nicks in the top.
Build: Headboard: Attach 9 brackets evenly spaced on back of the 4 Table Tops to join them together, and 3 on front.
Stands: Decide on location. Pre-drill holes for each stand all the way through. Mount into 1 1×4 per stand to give support.
Light: Decide on light height and mark with Crayon. Gorilla Glue Small 1/4″x3x8″ strips to Front of headboard. Let dry. Mount 1″ screws in wood to accommodate Key-less lights. Pre-drill holes for wiring through. Wire lights through Headboard and attach Key-less lights and pull wire tight. Mount Small strips of wood on Veneer with Wood Glue. Let Dry. Determine angle to drill for dowels. Glue Dowels in place. Pre-drill holes for dowels to attach to Headboard in the 1/4″x3″x8″ wood already attached. Install bulb and then Veneer Cover.
Switches: Determine length of wire from Lights to switch and cut. Use remaining with plug to go from switch to power strip. Wire with Caution.
Power Strips: You can mount wherever you want, but my wife and I decided under the bed would be sufficient.

But, with good reason…because it is for my first post as a contributor on Remodelaholic.com!
I met Cassity, the genius blogger and business-woman, behind Remodelaholic.com at the Haven Conference. Every time I bumped into her…like at first when I didn’t know who she was and asked her (yep, sometimes I am socially awkward) or when we were in line for the bathroom…she was always so lovely! Then, I took her class and was blown away by her brains. When she put out a call for contributors, I knew I had to apply. I believe it is best to always work for people you admire and can learn much from.
And, she chose me to contribute a post once per quarter in 2014! My topic is DIY furniture or furniture makeovers.
I will admit, I panicked at first. Furniture? What? Me? Then, when I calmed down I took a stroll through my furniture gallery and realized I do kind of have a knack for amazing and easy furniture makeovers. And, my philosophy for furniture hacking is make it simple, make it awesome!

I used the structure of the Kura beds to build two houses adjoining each other tree house style. So that the space below is room to play. The houses are connected and are a source of endless play for children. Dual color interior exterior, the roof has missing planks to be able to see the moon …
Hi guys, we’ve got a space that we’d like to fill using as much storage as possible which is 280cm high and 260cm wide. We need a floor based tv cabinet in it which we can sit the television on, but also we need enough nooks to put in a PS3 and tv satellite box that will be on view. So far, so easy…apart from the wall we would like to put this against is hollow with insulation inside and the home is rented, so ideally we would like to avoid mounting anything on the wall (we’re a bit nervous of missing wooden battening and making multiple holes in wall or not supporting units properly and it falling down). We are planning on using the storage for books, DVDs and video games. We would like to run the cabling through the back of the TV unit and to sockets on the adjoining wall.
We had the idea of using the combination of two 60 x 40 x 192 bestas with a Besta Boas in the middle of them supporting a 120 x 40 x 64 besta on top and only this unit affixed to the wall for extra support, but have been told by Ikea in the UK that the Boas has been discontinued and there is no stock left in any of the stores left in the UK!
Does anyone have any ideas on what units, modified or otherwise we could use to create a sleek, square unit using either besta or billy that has all junk fully hidden apart from the TV, games console and satellite receiver or alternatively a combination that is idiot-proof when it comes to wall mounting if this isn’t a possibility?
