As a child of the 80′s, I’ve always had a place in my heart for these arcade games that I spent countless hours and quarters on. Some of my fondest memories include my generous dad taking me and my younger brother to the arcade, giving us a bunch of tokens, hanging out with us despite not really caring about video games, hanging out at the local liquor store playing karate champ and later the original big buttoned street fighter with other kids, and pretty much fainting when we first saw the number of machines at the Disneyland arcade back in the day. So for the past few years, I’ve totally wanted to build my own arcade cabinet but unfortunately my wife and I love the modern clean lines of the Ikea aesthetic as our small house is pretty much an Ikea showroom. When I approached her a few months ago about this, it was a quick “Heck no! Where would it fit in here? It would totally look out of place even if we had the room for it.”

The design…

I convinced her to allow me to build and put an arcade cabinet in our living room if I could hide it inside a really slim 11.5″ deep Ikea billy bookcase that we had upstairs. I figured that I would divide it up into two parts and put them on drawer slides so that they would extend out and make it look like a real arcade cabinet.

It was at this point where I decided that I would play up the Ikea aesthetic using their blue and yellow color scheme and even the graphics that they used in their instruction manuals. Our black Ikea Billy bookcase is pretty nondescript from the outside and I wanted to contrast that with the hidden arcade machine that is bright, brash and perhaps even obnoxious with its lights and colors. And thus the Ikeakade was born.

Laiva book case to utility drawer By: ee31rm

I came up with an idea when I saw the Laiva book case at Ikea to build a utility drawer where I can store the broom and other cleaning tools in a closet (or long drawer). I always fancied long and thin drawers. Laiva seems to have all the components to build one with less cutting wood work. All it needed was to be rearranged and joined together.

In our kitchen we have a small space between the fridge and kitchen table top, just nice to have this long drawer. I’m not professional so it took me two days to plan to rearrange all the components. It took me 2 sets of Laiva to build this as I needed more plate bases to convert as door panels. I also bought the drawer roller to make it roll in and out, just like a normal drawer.

Ikea Vidja Nursery Lamp By: BabyArtsy

Using a couple stencils I’d already cut for the purposes of making baby onesies I stenciled the inside of the Ikea Vidja lamp to make a nursery lamp for baby’s room. I used the fabric paint I already had, but I think watercolor or colored ink might be pretty as it’s translucent. Acrylic paint, watered down just a bit, would work the same. The trick is to keep the stencil paint application light, using a dry brush, so the color comes through as well as the silhouette.

Kids desk and cat toilet all in one By: Karin

The desk is made of 2 Ikea PS lockers and one very long MDF board. We had one made with a length of 3,6 meters by 40,5 cm. Paint the board any colour you like and place it over the lockers. If the space between the lockers is very wide, it is best to support the plate with some sort of lath to avoid bending.

We have also created a cat flap in one of the lockers and now use it as a cat toilet. A small litter box fits inside the locker perfectly.

Trampa as cloud door mat By: Gingered Things

This hack includes only one Ikea item. Oll you need is the Trampa door mat. All you habe to do, is draw the shape of a cloud on to the back of Trampa. A compass may be helpful. After finishing this step you need a box cutter to cut out the cloud. With scissors you can now trim the edges. For the last step, the white outline, I took some carpet color and wide brush.

Gorm to Faux Built-in By: Cybele

Used some old Gorm Shelves and their bolts and new 1″ x 3″ pine from Home Depot to make the unit taller. Cut some of the shelves in half which provided an overlap that let me screw the side shelves onto the middle shelves. Used drywall screws to attach the unit to the wall in several places. Used some navy blue paint from the $5 oops section at Home Depot and there you have it, some inexpensive utility shelves pretending to be a built in bookcase.

Expedit Stand-Up Desk By: Falco

I always wanted to have a stand-up desk for my home office so I would get a break from sitting at the regular desk all day. But gee, have you seen the price tag of a regular stand-up?

So I simply took a 4×2 and a 5×1 Expedit, topped with a Lack table plate. All this is held together by 3M Velcro Tape. Works perfectly, although I have to admit that smaller persons might need an elevation to stand on (I am 190cm/6ft3″ tall).

Mydal Bunk Bed frame into two beds By: William Kapes

My two daughters had finally gotten tired of sleeping in the same room and rather than buy another bed, I modified the Mydal bunk bed they were using. I cut the legs three inches down from the top bed frame resulting in two beds. The top bunk became a low bed with a nice enclosed sleeping space for my two year old daughter. For the lower bunk I left the long supports sticking up and added a 2×2 frame to the top resulting in a Kura-like appearance. I even added the Kura bed tent to complete the look.

Note: I did this all while the bed was still fully assembled. I highly recommend taking it apart, cutting the legs and putting it back together again.
