Hackers Help: Äpplarö outdoor shelves as indoor wall shelves By: Lisa

Hello all!

I need simple shelves for my office and came upon the Äpplarö outdoor shelves that are normally used to go with the wood panel of the same collection.

I’m planning to drill two holes on each bracket to secure it on the wall. From what I’ve seen on the photos on Ikea’s website, I’ll also need to saw the metal part that would normally hold on the wood panel.

Has anyone been successful with this hack or could recommend another solution?

Rast Reclaimed By: Lisa

I was inspired by a reclaimed wood side table I found on Houzz and decided to recreate the look using a Rast dresser. The full tutorial is available here but here is a brief overview.

Step 1: Prior to assembling, I distressed the pieces of the Rast using a meat tenderizing mallet and a Phillips screw driver. I really beat it up.

Step 2: I stained all the wood with a dark brown wood stain.

Step 3: I painted the 7 pieces that comprise the visible surfaces of the Rast (3 drawer fronts, 2 sides, top, and kick plate). Using a wet rag, I dragged off some of the paint to achieve a worn look. Using a belt sander on some of the pieces, I sanded some areas through the paint to the surface of the wood then topped it with a gray wash.

Step 4: I waxed each piece with paste wax and buffed.

Step 5: I assembled the Rast.

Step 6: I attached new hardware.

Hackers Help: Is the table I’m talking about Vittsjo or not? By: Lisa

Last spring, I went to the closest Ikea store from me (which is 6 hours away!) in Canada. In the presentation area right next to the entry was a living room set-up.

They used four small side table to create a coffee table. They were not very big, probably 1′ x 1′ x 1,5′. The legs were made of raw/birch wood and the top was made of glass. They were sold 10$ each. They have a very similar look to Vittsjo’s tables (see the above photo).

I keep searching on Ikea’s website and catalogue, but I can’t find anything! Does anybody know what I’m talking about? If so, how is it named? My memory tells me it could be a discountinued Vittsjo’s product, but the colour makes me doubt…
