White walls have made a huge comeback and they aren’t just for people who can’t commit to color anymore. White walls set a calm, uncomplicated backdrop for any design aesthetic and makes for a real style statement. I have been wanting to make the jump myself, but like most trends, I like to see how it sits with me for a while before I fully commit. After sitting for a few months on this fresh perspective, I am slowly making some changes. Whether you paint an entire room white or just a focal wall, it is a welcome change that feels bright & cheerful. It’s often those simple changes, that give us a renewed sense of love for our homes & spaces. Being a visual person myself, I thought I would share some of my favorite white spaces, that will inspire you to see color in a whole new light.

Layering white walls with a contrasting wall makes a bold statement and still gives a sense of renewel. Adding in vintage finds, with warm patinas also compliments this color palette.

Using warm, earthy tones against more white, with pops of color & pattern creates a cozy retreat that is both inviting and stylish. I can’t help but love this buffalo art set against this crisp backdrop, it really showcases this statement piece.

BH&G Flea Market Chic-Painted Wicker From Jennifer OBrien

Whether you live coastally or not, wicker has made a huge come back. Once thought of as a seasonal material, is now being used both indoors and out, year round. Wicker has a unique & casual texture that blends seamlessly with any material. It can be found just about everywhere these days but if you want a real bargain, hit some yard sales or flea markets this summer. This woven material is so versatile, you can use your gently worn wicker finds as is or paint them for a fresh look.

Through the years I have collected my fair share of wicker. My personal instinct is to go neutral, either white, natural or dark brown. Sticking with neutrals, allows me flexibility to change things around and move pieces from room to room.

If neutral isn’t your thing, then go bold with your wicker. You can paint a single piece for a pop of color and repeat the tone with other accessories in the room or paint a set, even a grouping of chairs for continuity. Tip-if you can’t find that perfect color in a spray paint, try using a paint sprayer, that way you can customize your color.

If a softer palette is more your speed, how about a beachy blue? It’s slightly more bold than a neutral and still gives you plenty of design flexibility, plus what a style statement!

There may have been a time when you passed up that ornate wicker headboard at a yard or tag sale but not after seeing this bit of inspiration below. A perfect example of how a bold choice, both with color and design can create that wow factor.

BH&G Flea Market Chic: Layering Rugs From Jennifer OBrien

If you are like me, then your style is constantly evolving. My idea of a fun usually involves moving furniture and accessories around my home for a few hours, yup, I am a house geek. I know what you are thinking, that has to take more than a few hours but not always. I am constantly finding simple & fun ways to refresh my spaces that satisfies my design cravings & prevents a FULL on makeover. My favorite way to give my space a whole new look is by changing up the color palette. One easy way to do this is by layering rugs. If you browse your favorite magazine {BHG} or Pinterest lately, you are bound to find this trend front and center. I will be honest, with any trend it takes me a bit of time to figure out if it’s right for me & this one I like for few reasons. By simply adding another layer of pattern, texture and/or color you can connect it to other accessories and pillows you are bringing into the room. You can find smaller throw rugs easily, for a fraction of the cost, try hitting some local flea markets for a vintage feel or buy one new at a home store to tie it in with your eclectic style. And the last reason I am digging on this trend, there is little risk and commitment, if you decide you don’t like it so much in a few months, you can still use that throw rug in another area of your home. Here are a few ideas to get you inspired by this trend….

Use a colorful palette & pattern over an existing sisal to give you a new color direction and a bold new look for summer. The art and pillows bring out the soft indigo tones in the rug and make the space feel connected.

With this trend you can go big or small, size doesn’t determine style. Having a base rug to anchor the space allows you to play with different sizes.

How about layering a hide over a sisal or wool to give an organic, rustic feel? While I may not be there myself, I love this look in other people’s homes. By layering these natural textures it make the space feel grounded, warm & cozy.

If you are looking to follow a fun trend this summer I have just the thing- think botanicals! They seem to be everywhere this season, from natural & rustic to bold & bright. From the earliest of time, plant forms have been documented through simple sketches and paint. This timeless art saw a brave transition in the 1940′s with the iconic banana leaf wallpapers from designers Don Loper and Dorothy Draper. Whether you are seeking to follow this trend with a full on commitment or one on a smaller scale, I have some fantastic ideas that will get you feeling the green.

What a better way to follow this trend than through pillows. By simply adding a few botanical prints here and there you can be a part of this trend with a very small risk. Layering pillows in with your signature style, will no doubt give a high dollar designer look for less.

Taking the commitment level up a notch, lets talk upholstery. This may seem like a daring proposition, but if you think small then the options are limitless, such as stools, benches, small chairs and yes, even a headboard. What a huge statement this piece makes, it proves that being bold pays off.

Speaking of bold, how about a botanical wallpaper? I know, this is a FULL on commitment but again, what a statement this banana leaf print makes. Like the idea but a little weary, try a self adhesive version.

Although curtains can be an investment, especially if they are custom it is a great way to bring life into your space. I have always been one to fancy a print on a window, such as this vibrant botanical, it brings high style with a moderate risk. Plus if you make them yourself or find some vintage yardage, you will score on this trend for a lot less.

Probably my favorite way to follow any trend is through art. Layering your walls with original, one of a kind vintage finds or reproductions is an easy way to be current and stylish. Whether you choose to go simple or bold, this botanical trend has something for everyone.

Summer really wouldn’t be summer without time spent outdoors enjoying the company of family & friends. Backyard parties & weddings have become a chic venue these days as well as using flea market finds to create stylish outdoor spaces perfect for such events. Whether you are a planner or a last minute party kind of person like myself everyone needs an outdoor bar. When you have versatile pieces to use for serving drinks and food then throwing together a summertime soiree seems effortless. The great part about using vintage items to create an outdoor area is, not only will it give a casual rustic charm but it will also be affordable.

I recently decorated my front porch for summer and used some flea market touches along with some new items to make the space feel inviting. I created a beverage station with a simple tray & stand but it got me thinking about using a luggage stand and making a simple tray to fit. Anything that has good height and easy mobility is perfect especially for a small space.

Another great design element to look for when shopping for vintage items for outdoor use is anything with casters. The idea of being able to transport a piece from indoors to out can be bring functionality all year long. And when you do find that perfect piece you aren’t afraid to give it a pop of color that gives it some character, like these below.

A larger piece like a dresser or buffet can also be ideal for outdoor entertaining. It can give you ample space to host a variety of items for serving. I love how these creative hosts used the draws for extra storage and made use of every inch of space. Although pretty, these pieces will weather so be sure to either bring them inside or keep them protected against the elements after the event.

If you are tight on space the perfect solution is to go vertical. What a clever idea to use an old door for a beverage station. Adding shelves completes the piece and gives it that functionality every bar needs. Painting it all one color makes it feel fresh & cohesive.
