Two Menswear Designers’ Layered yet Orderly Co-Op By: Garrett Fleming
While I like being able to have final say in what goes into my home, I do sometimes wish that I had a partner to bounce ideas off of; someone opposite me that pushes for ever-unique solutions to design challenges. The most interesting creative work I have ever seen was born out of two un-likeminded individuals working together under a shared vision. One of my favorite examples of this is Dior designers Raf Simons and Pieter Mulier. One blunt, one more of a waffler, one caring, the other brazen — they complemented one another so well, that the final collection they created was truly visionary.
Menswear designers Shaun and Astrid’s Harlem, NY co-op is the perfect example of how styles can converge to create something personal. Having lived and worked in California, Shaun has a soft spot for knick-knacks and a laid-back, coastal vibe. His wife Astrid’s German upbringing, on the other hand, has instilled in her a love for clean lines and minimal aesthetics. When they moved into this one-bedroom spot four years ago, finding the right balance of their two styles was a bit challenging, but ended up organically shaping the space’s look. “It was important that our apartment feel like a home and not like something decorated by a stranger,” the two say. In order to achieve this, they draped each room in elements that remind them of travels together and the people they’ve met along the way. This “visual diary of [their] life together” isn’t only pleasant on the inside. It sits on one of the quietest streets in Manhattan with a rooftop garden that Shaun and Astrid call the best part of their home. Inspiration Makeover: The Portrait Chair By: Caitlin Kelch
As our Instagram feeds can attest to, we sometimes see an image that moves us and stays in our heads a little longer than most. Taking advantage of those special moments that completely capture our imaginations is something we’re trying to practice on a more regular basis. When Grace clipped and shared a lovely image from Martha Stewart Weddings (above left), it didn’t just end there. A few days later I happened to find what I refer to as a portrait chair at a thrift store for a reasonable six dollars. (If anyone knows the correct name of that type of chair, please share in the comments! We’d love to know its provenance.)
I imagined this six-dollar chair transformed with some sort of treatment that was reminiscent of the antique chair in the portrait. Instead of walking away with yet another creative idea in my head, I bought the chair and immediately headed to The Home Depot to grab some paint to realize my vision. New: Julia Rothman Wallpaper for Hygge & West By: Grace Bonney
If there is anything thing I love more than design, it has to be pets. Whether you share your home with a dog, cat, bird, hamster, lizard or anything else in between, I will always have a soft spot for the living things that keep us company. So when I heard about Julia Rothman‘s new dog-themed wallpaper for Hygge & West, I was psyched.
“Dog Park” is a cheerful illustrated pattern that includes portraits of Julia’s own dog, a Wheaton Terrier named Rudy, as well as the team dogs of Hygge & West. The wallpaper comes in two colorways, but my favorite part of this pattern is that 100% of the profits from this design will be donated to Copper’s Dream Animal Rescue in San Francisco and Midwest Animal Rescue in Minneapolis to help dogs find the loving homes they all deserve.
In addition to her dog pattern, Julia also designed two new patterns, Foret (inspired by Indian Chintz wall hangings from the 1600s) and Serengeti (inspired by her recent travel to Uganda). BH&G Building A Dream House: Darling Chicken Coops From Melissa Bahen
Today's Inspiration comes from Better Homes and Garden's Style Spotters Melissa Bahen.
Our poor chickens! We bought 6 sweet, day-old chicks earlier this year and kept them in a huge box in our garage until the weather outside warmed up. Now that the chickens are full-grown, fully feathered hens, they’ve been moved to our empty rabbit hutch. It’s quite roomy for a rabbit hutch, but with 6 plump hens living in it, I imagine things are getting a little tense. I think our dear chickies are probably rather tired of each other at this point, and would undoubtedly appreciate some room to roam and spread their wings. Luckily, we have a beautiful, new coop being built for them, and it should be ready any day! My husband is always meeting people who want to trade work and happen to be in the construction business; I feel like our house was largely built on favors and paybacks! And that’s exactly how we’re getting our chicken coop. It is built and painted and ready to go. We just have to figure out how to get it here.
If you’ve ever peeked at my “Someday House” board on Pinterest, you’ve probably noticed lots of darling chicken coops. All of those pictures came in handy when we needed to choose a chicken coop design. Here are some of the super cute chicken coops we used for inspiration. Now we just need a name!

I’ve had my eye on this gorgeous chicken coop from Heather Bullard for years–I first spotted it long before we bought our land or started building The Dream House. It is so lovely. And you can even buy a set of plans to make your own!
This adorable (yes, adorable!) cedar coop from Williams-Sonoma features the coop and nesting box on top, an enclosed chicken run below, and a really, really cute attached garden box!
One of the very first things I ever pinned on Pinterest was this lovely black chicken coop from The Art of Doing Stuff. With it’s dark, moody paint and hanging lanterns, it reminds me of La Belle Epoque.
This chicken coop from Better Homes & Gardens makes ME want to pull a chair inside and read for a while under that leafy canopy!
I can’t wait to show you our chicken coop; I can’t wait to see it myself. And I’m sure our chickens can’t wait to get out from under each other and have a little more space and some fresh farm air. Stay tuned!
EXPEDIT and the Bathroom Sink By: IH guest
This is not the first hack I have done as I made a bed for my son. He is now down a unit because I have taken his shelving unit to make an idea I have had in my head for a while! An Expedit bathroom vanity.
Used : Expedit 8 (now Kallax) there is not much to it really, I lay it on its side, repositioned the cupboards, drilled holes for the pipes and siliconed the sink to the top.
My husband returned from Edinburgh with the final pieces of my puzzle, drawers which weren’t straight forward to fit but I managed it. And the DRONA boxes which are spot on colour for the whole look.
I am so proud of my unit. It’s just what my newly designed bathroom needed.
