Behind the Bar: Raspberry Gin Cocktail By: Amy Azzarito

This is our second cocktail from the creative duo of photographer Kathryn McCrary and designer Jenn Gietzen (see their first collaboration, a Peach Margarita, right here.). Technically, this is the last weekend of summer so we wanted to squeeze in one last toast to summer’s bounty. (You can always substitute frozen, thawed berries if you can’t find fresh ones.) Kathryn and Jenn dubbed this light, refreshing drink “Ooh, Berry Berry.” It’s light and sweet with a refreshing hint of mint and is pretty much the perfect way to end summer. -Amy

Movable Expedit Standing Desk with Storage By: Purvin

Materials: Expedit 5×5 Bookshelf, Expedit cabinets and drawers, Expedit Casters (4 sets), Frosted glass panel

I saw this hack on a website previously about small space living and added a few touches of my own. Link here.

Only changes I made were:

1. Added frosted glass topper

2. The shelf what was not built in I placed on top of the level that will become the standing desk platform. Help give it a more substantial feel.

3. For lighting I bought an LED desk lamp but just hung it from the top (that way you do not have to drill holes and the desk is still clear for other items)

4. The top I have some picture frames from Kohl’s but drilled on some lighting to give it emphasis on future pictures I add (these are the stock photo’s)

New Kura bed tent By: Juliana

Materials: Green Kura bed tent

My daughter didn’t enjoyed the original green Kura bed tent because she couldn’t see anything when she was on the bed. I came up with the idea of using one crochet blanket made by my grandmother to make her a new bed tent. Just used the original structure from green Kura bed tent and sewed the crochet blanket so the structure could be adapted.

One of the most difficult parts of running a creative or arts-based business is just that – the business. From pricing and licensing to negotiating gallery shows and agent fees, the world of being a full-time artist can be incredibly complicated, confusing and isolating. Thankfully Chronicle decided to tackle the fine art world for their latest Inc. series book, with artist Lisa Congdon at the helm. Lisa began her fine art career in her late thirties and was able to draw on valuable work and life experience when it came time to build her fine art practice. Through hard work, planning and with plenty of drive, she’s become a huge success and Art, Inc. is brimming with advice drawn from not just her life experience, but the experience of many artists within the contemporary art and illustration world. I was blown away by all of the practical, useable and easy-to-digest information and think I’ve pretty much found my go-to holiday gift for all the new and aspiring artists in my life. Work Light for lathe or other bench tools By: Bryan

Materials: JANSJÖ

I needed a small work light for my hobby lathe. Most of the work lights I found were extremely overpriced, used halogen lights that burn my fingers, and are way two bright for a small workspace, so I turned to IKEA. I found the JANSJÖ Desk lamp would be a perfect hack.

The lamp comes disassembled so I simply tossed the lamp base and used the lamp arm. I placed the lamp where I wanted it mounted and marked the two holes I needed to drill.

I drilled the two holes with a 13/64ths drill bit. The 3/4 inch MDF that makes of the base of my lathe was two thick for the existing screws so I used a 1/2 inch forstner to drill a wider hole so the screw and washer could be used. The other option would be to replace the screws with a longer screw from the hardware store.

This simple hack sure made my lathe a much easier to use with a nice bright, cool to the touch light. I could see myself using this hack in other tools as I build my collection.

10 Classic Movies and Their Alter Ego Chairs By: Grace Bonney

When I first started Design*Sponge, I had a bit of a chair problem (which has now been replaced by a ceramics obsession). At one point I had at least four chairs for every person living in my home and it got to be a little ridiculous. I ended up giving them away to good homes (what was I doing with a child’s mid-century rocking chair, anyway?) but I still have a soft spot for chairs that makes me want to take them all home like shelter puppies.

Last week Amy, Max and I were talking about a new light that was coming out and I said it reminded me so much of the movie Sleeper. We started talking about furniture that reminded us of certain movies (which was the original inspiration for our column, Living In). I thought it would be fun to turn this idea into one big post, so I decided to focus on my favorite piece of furniture: the humble chair. It’s funny how a single piece of furniture can encapsulate a style, time and look so clearly and, for me, these chairs feel exactly like the movies we’ve paired them with here. So if you need ideas for extra seating at home – or just a great movie to watch while you sit in that chair – this list is for you. xo, grace
