A Guide to Tent Types By: Grace Bonney

This time of year seems to be all about getting outside and celebrating in one way or another. From family barbeques and backyard weddings to block parties and intimate dinners, summer events make the most of the great outdoors in any way they can. Almost every aspect of an outdoor party can be planned, but weather is always the wild card. To avoid a total wash out, most people look into tents for outdoor events, whether it’s a party for 10 or 100. But renting (or buying) a tent can be a confusing proposition. I’ve rented a small handful of tents in my life and each time left me wondering what terminology I should have known and what options exist beyond the basic pop-up tents you see at craft fairs and festivals. So this morning I thought I’d break down the types and terms you need to know to get started. Here’s hoping all of our summer outdoor parties have beautiful weather and fair skies. xo, grace

How To Make a Billy Bookcase Look Expensive By: Theodore Leaf

Materials: BILLY Bookcases

I started by looking up “billy Ikea hack” on Google images, I went through tons of photos and blog posts showing the different changes one could make. (Kate’s hack on her blog Centsational Girl was my fave) I measured my space and consulted the good old website and finally settled on two full-size Billy bookcases and one narrow, all with the height extension added.

Now for the fun part the “hacking”! After my extensive research online I got down to the basic elements that you want cover to create the “built-in” look: crown molding, base molding & hide the seams with wood.

My final shopping trip was to Prince Lumber which is coincidentally 5 blocks from our apartment #amazing! I created a chart with all of the measurements of the bookcase to show the sales people so they could help me determine how much of each piece I needed.

Once I got back home step one of this job was to fully assemble the Billy’s just like the were at the store.

Now it was go time, I centered the crown molding and put the first finish nail in. This is really where that tool showed off, honestly it was so easy once I got started. With the crown molding up i did the same thing for the base molding. Next it was time to hide the seams between the bookcases with thin wood called “latices”

After a quick coat of paint and primer (matched from a small shelf) i was ready to style the bookcase!

Dream Trip: Hiking the Appalachian Trail By: Amy Azzarito

It’s the time of year when I have travel on the brain. If I’m not heading somewhere, I’m thinking about it. So we decided to spend the summer asking some of our favorite creative people to share the stories of their travel adventures. That way, even if you’re not traveling, you can be reading about it.

A couple of years ago, graphic designer and letterpress printer Macon York took a break from creating wedding invitations, stationery and cards to fulfill a dream that started when she was ten years old – to hike the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. When she was fifteen, Macon hiked a 50-mile section of the trail with a summer camp program, which only further cemented her resolve, and she promised herself that she would hike the entire trail before she turned 30. Serious planning began when she turned 26; she read trail memoirs, attended an informative workshop, saved money and researched gear. Then on March 20, 2012, she began the trail with a good friend, but when an old knee injury flared up on the third day, the friend had to call it quits and Macon continued the long journey on her own.

She was completely alone for about a week and then met a fun group of guys and began immersing herself into the trail community. (She was even given a trail name – “Daystar” – for her constant commentary on her love of light: morning light, evening light and the way that the light would shine through the trees.) She would frequently hike solo during the day and then meet up with her friends at campsites in the evening. A little more than six months after beginning the trail, Macon finished on September 25 at age 27. (You can read the story of her adventure here.) -Amy

Hackers Help: Tylosand Sleeper Sofa Cover hack for regular sofa By: Tanya

Hi Hackers!

We have long been in search of affordable Tylosand covers for some mismatched pieces we’ve managed to pick up this year. We finally found a great E-bay seller and after much back and forth about details we purchased the Kungsvik Sand covers for our loveseat and 3 seater pieces to create a bigger sectional. Unfortunately, it was unclear that one of the covers was for the sleeper sofa version of the Tylosand, which looks similar to our 3 seater but has a different system for the actual seat pillows. Basically, the two seat pillows are much thinner pillows that fold into the cover to create the illusion of a thicker seat pillow (you can see this more clearly in the bottom image), while our pillows are just two regular thickness pillows from the regular model (as they look in the top image). All other pillows/pieces can be worked around but the two seat cushions are where we’re totally stumped. Anyone have any genius ideas for how we can make this work?
