Cat Tree with Ikea Lack ! By: Julie

You need:

4 Ikea Lack tables

12 brackets chair, 24 screws

A screwdriver

Twine for cat tree (I used Sisal)

Ikea Mat Bathroom

Procedure:

Overlap and secure 3 tables of 4, using brackets chair and screws.

Use the 4th tray table to make the base of the tree.

After that, wrap the Sisal twine around the feet of the table. You can attach it with glue, tacks or just as I did: making nodes (easier in case you want to remove and replace it).

I use the mat bathroom to make the tree more comfortable. I cut it in half, I put the bias with my sewing machine so that it doesn’t fray.

That’s it !

Subwoofers home By: Kico

Materials: IVAR

My boyfriend bought a soundsystem with a subwoofer and I wanted to have a rack around it. I found the Ivar from IKEA, which has the depth I need.

Step 1: Cut Ivar. I need the height of 76cm and cut the side panels with a jigsaw.

Step 2 : Sand the cuts!

Step 3: Paint the Ivar white!

Step 4: Get some pallet-boards. I took 21 boards from about 3 pallets.

Step 5: Sand the boards with 2 different sandpapers. I first used 80 and then 160!

Step 6: Cut the boards in the length you want to.

Step 7: Sand the cuts

Step 8: Stain the boards, I used nuttree.

Step 9: Wax the boards.

Step 10: Drill holes for your screws. (I used screws with big heads as I wanted a raw look and a vintage look!

Dog/Kids Bench By: Julia Hill

Materials: 2 Malm (attached-style) Nightstands

When I moved, I knew I would not be able to use my Malm Nightstands in my bedroom. So, instead I made them into this little bench/bed for my dogs.

I removed the magazine racks from both nightstands. Filled the holes with wood filler and then sanded the excess off.

I attached the two stands together using mending-flat plates and screws on the back. I use a scrap piece of birch screwed on to underside to connect them there for more stability (and to create a place to attach the legs! Note: Make sure to leave a little room so that the drawers still operate easily. I found this out the hard way.

I added prefab legs form the hardware store. I had to cut them down to fit.

I added a little paint and some molding to the back mainly to hide the holes from the magazine racks, but also to make it prettier. I added a blanket on the seat for comfort as it was a little slippery for my dogs without it.

My dogs love to sit on their bench. I use the drawers for their extra toys – they are very spoiled!

Custom-made bathroom closet for small bathroom By: Cornelia

Materials: FAKTUM closet, LAGAN countertop

I saw a beautiful bathroom closet in a shop that was more than 1000€ and too big for our bathroom. Our bathroom is tiny and the closet would have to be right next to the door, so size was essential.

After some thinking I came up with a plan of my own and went to Ikea for some items…. One Faktum wall closet (great because it is not too deep) and the Lagan countertop (not sure if they still sell it, but you should find similar ones in DIY). In a local DIY shop I got a round stick of wood, 15mm diameter, and a wood drill of the same size.

First, I assembled the Faktum and cut 2 openings in the top and one in the back for the plumbing.

Then I cut the Lagan to size (about 10cm longer than the Factum on either side). I cut a piece out on either end, drilled a hole through the remaining part and put the stick through.

That makes a nice built-in towel holder! For the plumbing I cut the same openings as in the Faktum.

Next I fixed the Lagan to the Faktum and the Faktum to the wall.

I oiled the Lagan as well as the sticks to make them waterproof. Then I put the sink on the Lagan.

Finally I connected the pipes of the sink and used the leftover pieces of Lagan to make shelves!

2014 Wallpaper from Juju Papers By: Grace Bonney

This week marks the kickoff of Design Season in NYC. Friday is the start of BKLYN Designs and then after that we go into overdrive with ICFF, The National Stationery Show, Surtex and just about every amazing offsite show you can dream of. I’m always most excited to meet designers in person that we’ve been writing about online, but I also have a soft spot for pattern hunting. The wallpaper at ICFF and BKLYN Designs is always inspiring, so I’ve been collecting booth numbers and cards in hopes of finding something really special this year. Metallic patterns are my weakness so this new collection from Juju Papers in Portland, Oregon has jumped straight to the top of my “must see” list for ICFF.

Designer Avery Thatcher of Juju designed two new styles for this year’s launch: Sisters of the Sun and Cle Elum. Sisters of the Sun is a contemporary spin on a classic dot pattern. I love the way each dot feels different and lets you see a bit of Avery’s paintbrush gesture with each dot. As much as I love a clean geometric, designs like this that really show the artist’s hand and style a bit more are always my favorite.

Cle Elum is a hand-drawn pattern inspired by both the flora and fauna of the Cle Elum river area in Washington and a short story by Raymond Carver, who lived in and wrote about the Pacific Northwest. The pattern is an upbeat twist on Carver’s dark tale with fun florals, coniferous trees and hazel catkins in shiny silver and gold. I love the dark charcoal background on this style- it feels so rich and sophisticated but still has a bit of playfulness. New Mugs from Xenia Taler By: Grace Bonney

Every time I visit the Midwest I am seriously tempted to pack up shop and move. We flew to Madison last week for a talk with the incredible community of Design Madison and got to drive around town, meeting some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. (Side note: if you ever get a flat tire, Madison is the place to do it. Their repair shops are the friendliest I’ve ever seen.) After Madison we drove to Chicago for two days and enjoyed some of the most delicious food and beautiful weather. Chicago is home to some of my favorite artists, so whenever I’m visiting I have the temptation to knock on their doors and see their work in person. Thankfully I didn’t do that, but it reminded me to check back in with some people to see what was new in their collections.

Xenia Taler is one of my favorite Chicago-based artists and she recently introduced a beautiful line of mugs that carry her signature folk-art inspired illustrations onto a new surface. I’ve collected Xenia’s patterned tiles for years, but these mugs are a fun way to bring her pattern design into your home on a more day-to-day basis. I’m cutting back on coffee, so I think these mugs, especially the golden horse, would be perfect for holding pencils and pens on your desktop and adding a little detail to a desk that needs a tiny update. Xenia decided to branch out into mugs because she felt that they were objects that often, “elicit emotional attachment because they’re often at your desk and by your side throughout the day.” I think her hunch is spot on- my favorite mugs are always out somewhere, whether they’re holding tea, pencils or a tiny flower arrangement.
