Can anybody help me identify, or even replace, this caddy? I bought it in the kitchen section a few years ago and it has been invaluable – until an accident this morning. I have seen similar items, but nothing has done as well as this wee gem. And I don’t think it’s mendable.

Description:
When my partner moved in with me, he asked me why there is no table in my living room. I answered that the room is too small to accommodate a table. I didn’t want to remove my Expedit storage and placing it elsewhere in the flat was not an option. I also didn’t want to flip the unit vertically as it blocked the light from the window.
In my previous apartment, I had the Expedit desk that was now in storage. I started testing solutions in which the desk top could serve as a table. All it required was additional support for the (too short) leg of the desk. I found just the thing in the local Homebase store – two Castors that fitted perfectly to the hight we required.
We’ve fixed the desk onto the bookshelf with a couple of brackets at the back and secured the bottom of the table and side of the bookshelf with a felt pads to make sure that the table remains in place. The wheels that we’ve fixed to the table leg have been blocked for moving with the security lock.
Once we arranged the table, we realised that we need custom-high chairs that will allow comfortable seating as well as fit underneath the table to save space around it. We found a used Bosse bar stools on eBay, cut their legs to fit the hight of the table, put felt pads on top of them and voila – our new table/storage combination was completed. It is perfect for working, eating and preparing meals and it fits perfectly into the space between the living room and the kitchen!

I am really hoping that someone out there can help me with this amazing hack using a Stora loft bed, with a Hemnes twin Playhouse bed underneath (done by JC Braithwhite) – does anyone know of somebody who can draw up plans/step by step instructions for a hack they’ve found and can’t stop thinking about?!

My husband and I can be pretty handy, if we have guidelines to follow. I have a Stora bed sitting in my storage room and am seriously considering buying a second one that I found on Craigslist, because 2 daughters means we need 2 super cool playhouse beds. I live that the sleeping area is “downstairs” and playtime is up – seems safer for younger kids (and easier to change the sheets!)
My only Ikea hack was a pretty basic Lack hack that I followed a tutorial for. I didn’t know, Is there anyone out there that you can pay who can write up a tutorial for a Stora hacked into a playlist, with step-by-step instructions and plans? Is that something anyone does, like the way you can hire freelancers to draw plans in sketch up, does anyone here on Ikea Hackers do this?
Oh, and I need to be able to build something that cab be disassembled for a move and reassembled in the new location. I hope “hiring a hacker” is an actual thing and I’m not just a crazy person.

Materials: Besta cupboard (cm)- 128 high x 120 wide; Besta 128 x 60, Besta TV unit 120 wide
We needed to create additional playroom storage and Besta units were a perfect fit for our space and toy boxes. We designed lots of easy to reach storage and a wide display shelf on top of the cabinets for display and a collection of musical instruments.
To hide the sides and tops of the Besta carcasses we created a three sided box for the TV area, and ran the top piece right across all the units. We used a good quality plyboard which has a lovely layered edge detail, with all the cabinets in high gloss white it needed a bit of detail to lift the whole design. Very pleased with the result, nobody would guess its a mostly Ikea installation.
To make your own:
We used Besta 128cm high units and a 120cm wide Besta TV unit as the base. They are easy to install and reasonable on the pocket, and just the right depth for storage, books and the TV. All cabinets cost around $700.
Once they were installed we made the 3 sided plywood box the TV sits in. The sides were joined using my fabulous Kreg Jig, with the holes on the outside of the uprights. All joins are neatly hidden from view.
Attaching the top shelf was trickier because of the weight and length of the piece. We ended up placing the 3 sided box on the TV unit and pulling it away from the wall. Then we positioned the top shelf on the box using the cabinets as a support, see below. You can see the Kreg predrilled holes facing on the outside of the box.
The sides were then attached to the top with the Kreg, working from the back to the front, and sliding the TV stand back into position as we worked. I do love my Kreg!
We love the overall result, it doesn’t read Ikea but the price point was perfect. And we still have the room to add extra shelves or cabinets if we need extra storage. I love the wide display shelf and tv “box”, it makes it look custom rather than flatpack.

After viewing lots of hacks on here and various Pinterest posts I had to make something of my own. I decided on creating a penny topped Ikea lack table!
What is needed:
Ikea Black/Brown Lack table
Wood moulding
Black paint
Picture frame mount
10mm reinforced glass
621 Pennies
Brasso cleaner (wadding)
Overall this took way longer than I’d initially planned as I’d thought of using a mix of both clean and dirty but then I decided I wanted a sheen finish so painstakingly cleaned each and every coin.
Moulding was used for the edges to create the insert for the coins. A picture frame mount was used because the coins did not go right to the edge on all sides so the coins just float away under the mount leaving a nice professional edge.
Went for reinforced glass to avoid any damage and luckily the 10mm thickness worked perfectly for the depth left by the moulding.
I could have created a pattern or used alternative layouts but I like the lines this creates to the eye just simply from having them in a honeycomb style layout.
Job done…next!
Materials: HEMNES
I followed the footpath of ScrapHacker (Stockholm), Paolo (Canada) and Grace Wang (UK) to create a customized, double-sized Hemnes shoe cabinet that matches the colors of the black-white-red terrazzo floor of my hallway.
First repainted the legs, frames and the top. After a very light sanding on the factory paint job, I used Sparvar’s grey spray-based primer. It dries quickly and provide a nice surface to work on. Then I used Alpina’s XT high-gloss oil-based enamel with paint rollers to achieve a shiny surface. I used black on the legs and the frame items, and burgundy red on the top to create a “Mondrianesque” look. The surface is not 100% blister-free, but it will do in my relatively dim hallway.
I let the enamel to cure for 2 days, and assembled the two cabinets using the “Paolo-Grace method”, i.e. using only one of the pillars in the middle position. I was a bit afraid that I may not be precise enough when replicating the holes of the other pillar, but it was not that difficult after all, and I had no problem with the assembly.
Just like the others, I did not shorten the top boards, as I had enough space for the extra overhangs. I fixed them to the frame using the 8 screws that are in the package, and did not bother replicating the holes for the pins and wooden bits. For the screws you do not even need to drill the top board – it is soft enough to turn the screws in using an electric screwdriver.
So far I am happy with the result. I am really curious about how the paint job will withstand the wear and tear on the long run.

Materials: EXPEDIT
My husband and I moved into a smaller home and I needed a small desk for our desktop computer. So, off to Ikea I went and purchased a 2X2 Expedit, put it together and left the top divider out, cut off the pegs flush with the shelf that hold said divider in place. The enlarged space is for the printer.
Then I purchased a 14 inch set of drawer slides and a nice piece of 15X48 inch wood at Lowes. Since the directions for the drawer slides are to have the drawer 1/2 inch smaller than the width of the space, I had the boys at Lowes cut it for me. Then I went home, took off the top of the Expedit by unscrewing those big bolts so I could attach the part of the slide that goes inside the walls of the unit, then reattached the top. All I had to do was sand, stain (ebony), and polyurethane the board (with at least 3 coats) and add the slides. I had to play around a bit with where the slides needed to be attached.
I am very pleased with such a simple hack!
I needed a space that would fit next to my bed and act as a sort of night stand, yet also allow me to have lots of storage for misc things and hold my Dual Monitor computer. I had a Coffee table that I made from Wood Pallets and stained But that wasn’t cutting it.

I first came across the Lack Sofa Table which fit perfectly between my bed and my closet space and wasn’t too high. But allowed me to store my tools, Custom Ikea stool (made from the bottom of a Jules Jr Desk Chair & Marius stool) and misc things under it. Along with my iMac and Speakers just high enough that I could access the keyboard when walking up with out leaning over too much, like a standing desk.
However it wasn’t sturdy enough to really support my dual monitors and pc setup, plus it was still a little low for my tastes. I originally looked at the expedit 1×5 but that was too long. I didn’t want to have to cut it and deal with that whole mess (more work then I wanted to put in) so I decided to get a 2×4 Expedit along with two Expedit 1×1′s. Swap the end pieces giving me Two 1×4′s which fit almost perfectly on top of the Lack Coffee Table providing great weight distribution for my iMac, Second display and studio speakers. The second 1×4 fit perfectly as upper storage for my closet area. The access pieces I took and made two 1×2 benches for my music room to double as storage and a seat bench to play guitars on. I now have a GREAT nightstand, standing desk, storage space all in one.
